Haven Reviews

You've updated to using a database - so what's new?
Aside from the fact of an actual database, there are several new things. There are now more general searches under each fandom so that you don't have to trawl through every letter in the alphabet if you know what that you're in the mood for slash (for example). There are also non-fandom-specific quick searches. An advanced search is on my list of upgrades as soon as I've recovered from putting this together. The Lucky Dip function pulls up a random review from a database if you're in the mood for something you wouldn't normally pick.

Register? What's that about?
No, this is not a sneaky attempt to force you to register to use the site. Registration is there for anyone who reviews for this site and wants to take advantage of a few little short-cuts. You can read more about registration at the relevant FAQ.

Why do you link to the archive instead of directly to the story?
A lot of archivists don't appreciate people making deep links to pages within their website - in effect it would make all their hard work look like a part of my site. I don't link directly to a story without permission.
It is usually easiest to find stories by the author's name and that will often give you any sequels in the correct order.

I clicked on the link to an archive but it's broken. What should I do?
Email me and I'll try to find the archive's new location or remove the review if the story has disappeared without a trace.

I read this really great story and I want to tell everyone about it - can I write a review?
Yes! I crave reviews from other people because there's only so much fanfiction one girl can get around to reading. Any fandom goes. Use my nifty little form and you'll see your words up on the site in a few days.

You gave something a great review but I read it and I thought it sucked. Why did you recommend it?
Everyone's ideas on what is a great read differ. Everything in this section is the personal viewpoint of the reviewer. Please don't flame anyone for enjoying a different kind of story to you. Have a look around because there's bound to be something reviewed that you do agree with.

I adore Star Trek/Lost Boys/Hornblower etc. fanfiction. Why haven't you reviewed any?
Because so far I haven't read anything in those fandoms. But if you have then you'd be a great person to contribute the first reviews for those fandoms. Fill out the form and let me know what's great to read.

Why do Buffy and Stargate have their own sections when everything else is lumped in the other fandoms section?
Buffy and Stargate have more reviews because those have been my main fandoms. As soon as other fandoms get enough recommendations to warrant it I'll give them their own section.
As you can see, Lord of the Rings (April 2004), Harry Potter (August 2004) and Atlantis (January 2006) have now joined the ranks of fandoms with enough entries to warrant their own listings. So, with enough reviews, your fandom can also have its own section. I'm not a fandom elitist. Now that the reviews are on a database, setting up the quick pick links for a new fandom doesn't take long at all.

Slash? Gen? Het? What's that all about?
Gen - general fiction with no romance between any characters, canon or non-canon.
Het - fiction with romance(s) between a man and a woman as a central or secondary theme.
Slash - fiction with romance(s) between people of the same gender as a central or secondary theme.

A bunch of reviews are dated 01-08-02. Why?
They are the reviews contributed prior to August 1st 2002. I have no idea when they were contributed because I didn't start keeping records until I redesigned the archive in 2002. In the old, static HTML site the date was simply left out. The new database requires a date, so this is the best compromise I could work out.

Why have you listed something as gen when it's actually het/slash?
There are two possible reasons. The first is that it's one of the reviews contributed before the major over-hall in August 2002 and I didn't write the description so I had to make an educated assumption - email me and I'll get that changed. The other reason is that it's something added after August 2002 and the author didn't correct the copy I sent to them before putting it on the site. Let me know and I'll change it.

H/C? ER? What's with all the abbreviations?
Ain't fandom a wonderful thing? We come up with all kinds of scary abbreviations that make no sense to outside readers.
H/C = hurt/comfort
ER = established relationship
AU = alternative universe

Is there any genre of fanfic you won't accept reviews for?
For ethical and legal reasons, I do not read, do not review and do not accept reviews for real person fic or fics containing sex involving minors (chan). This policy will not be changed.

Any other questions? Email me and I'll answer to the best of my ability.
