Plot: Dawn’s suspicious of the three electricity inspectors outside her sister’s Rome apartment.
Review: The worlds of Buffy and Doctor Who fit together really well in this. It's interesting to see Dawn's opinions of the Doctor, Jack and Rose. It is quite funny with Jack being Jack more than once. I also really liked how the remix subtitle was so clever, since it means something in both fandoms.

Review: It's hard to say much about this because it's quite short. But there's a lovely sweet relationship between Sarah and Harry in here. There's also a whole load of things that make you think what would have happened to Sarah's house while she was away. There is some dodgy puncuation going on there but given that I'd read it a few times before I noticed, it's good enough to overlook.

Review: I read this without knowing who the Tuesday Girl in the title was at the start, hence me not giving it in the pairing. The story does give you clues as to her identity really well, so that by the time Harry works it out, we do too.
It's also quite a sweet romance story for Harry, who is perfectly in character throughout, being slightly clueless. Whereas Sarah thinks she's got it all worked out.

Plot: Still...there was something to be said about the familiarity of a place at the holidays. And so it was that the Doctor found himself materializing in that old familiar alley at the Powell Estates, on the evening of Christmas Day, very nearly two years after he lost Rose Tyler into a parallel universe.
Review: This is a beautiful, slightly wistful 'what if' fic. Written before Voyage of the Damned aired but set afterwards, it's a Christmas fic about hope for tomorrow. I loved the Doctor in this one, less manic than normal but fitting for the type of fic, and the attention to the details of the Who-verse. It's one of those fics that leaves you with a warm, happy, fuzzy feeling so it's perfect for the season but at the same time it leaves you wondering what happened next. Curl up with some chocolate and enjoy this one.

Plot: After stumbling into the TARDIS, Dodo realizes that the Doctor and Steven Taylor need her. Although not in the same way. And she's intent on convincing Steven of that. A sickeningly sweet and touching story.
Review: Dodo is intent on making Steven realise his feelings for her match hers for him. You can see how they get closer in the segments of the story connected directly with the episodes. The last scene is quite sad and hopeful. Because it's written from Dodo's point of view you can't quite tell from Steven's actions what he feels, so I like that it's ambiguous - we only know as much as Dodo knows at any point.

Review: I find it hard to be convinced by most Jack/Ianto stories, so the fact that I'm reviewing this tells you how good it was. Because it's set in two different times, one with the Jack we see in Doctor Who and the other with the Jack we see in Torchwood, it's good to see the differences between them. And there are a lot of differences, which Ianto spots too.
It's those differences, along with the explanation of them that make this story so interesting.

Review: This fic fills in that gap between The Christmas Invasion and New Earth, stretching that period out a bit and thereby fixing a some minor continuity...errors.
It's an interesting fic because it captures the newly regenerated Ten perfectly. Cryptile has thought about the character and his transition and put it into words that fit. There are some great images in here, particularly the graffiti (needs to be read to understand), and some interesting insights into the other characters. At heart, though, it's about the Doctor and finishing the transition that began in The Christmas Invasion.

Review: What I particularly enjoyed about this story is that although half of it is set in the past, with Jack as the only character we know, the mystery is so intriguing that the story could have not had any elements in the present at all and I'd still have been hooked. Of course, the present elements improve it, and without them the mystery would never have been solved.
The original characters are really well written and are interesting to read in their own right.

It's also an interesting character study of the Ninth Doctor and, by extension, of Rose. I loved the thought that went into this fic and the careful attention to detail. She brings in details from the old series to make it all tie together.
The voices of the characters, Rose, the Doctor and Jack, are all there and she has some lovely scenes that I could see and hear in my mind as I read them. It's angsty, thoughtful and just right for this Doctor.

Review: 'Read this because it's one of the few Doctor Who fics that haven't made me cringe' possibly isn't the best recommendation, until you realise how rare it is for me to read Doctor Who fic and just how bad some of the things that I've been venturing into have been. This is really a very good fic.
It's set immediately after Captain Jack joins the TARDIS crew. I've noticed that Captain Jack, one of my favourite characters, seems to be a difficult one for fanfic authors to get a decent handle on. He too often descends into caricature - the author of this fic gets him just right and conveys the beginnings of a friendship with the Doctor beautifully. It had the same kind of tone as the episodes and provides a nice tag to the episode, filling in details that the show writers brushed over.

Review: This reads like it could be an episode of Doctor Who. There's some lovely stuff between the Doctor and Sarah Jane, and great Sarah Jane stuff in general. There's a mystery, or possibly more than one and the whole question of whether the Doctor can work it out in time, or whether Sarah will get there first.
There's only two bad things about this. First, it's written in American English - I just can't see Sarah saying words like gotten, but the whole thing is good enough to overlook the comparitively few words of American English. Review: I'm always a sucker for a good Five Things fic, so this was a good read. It's primarily the 9th and 10th Doctors, but KickAir incorporates elements from original and new series without difficulty. You don't strictly need to have watched the original series, but a couple of the Things will have more resonance if you're familiar with it. KickAir comes up with some interesting potential AUs, the first one probably being my least favourite and I thoroughly enjoyed the rest. The second has echoes of an 'Age of Steel' question that I've been discussing with friends lately and it's always good to see Sarah-Jane return.

Review: This story was hard in places, not because of bad writing but because it deals with the Year That Never Was. When you start to examine that idea in detail you start to appreciate the full horror of what happened to the world in that time and Meddow does a great job with it. She doesn't leave everything hopeless, though. As with the episode, there is a spark of hope in the darkness.
The most interesting thing is that this fic doesn't deal with any of the characters we see on screen, but rather with how Donna, Sarah Jane and the other SJA characters fare during the time. The characterisation is just right and the ideas are huge but well done. It's a fic that stays with you long after finishing and the writing captures the heart of the ideas.

This one has terrific characterisation and the author has really thought about the character. It's not about Jackie in the context of the Doctor or just about her and Rose. It's really a Jackie-centric fic and I love the character Meredith lets us see.

Plot: Five planets the Doctor never took Rose to, and the things that didn't happen there.
Review: This is set just after 'The End of the World', so there are a few spoilers for that episode. There are also a couple of references to classic Doctor Who episodes, but at a level where readers new to Doctor Who won't have any trouble. In fact, that's one of the things that this fic does well - giving little nods for classic DW fans but keeping it just as enjoyable and readable for new fans.
What stood out in this fic was the understanding of the relationship between Rose and the Doctor - how different and similar they are at the same time. It's used to great effect here and really is the basis for the trip that the Doctor takes Rose on. If you're looking for a well-written fic reads between the lines of the characters, this is for you.

It's not really an introspective fic, yet at the same time it is thoughtful and insightful. It is also a fic with an interesting core idea that is done well and keeps you glued. Review: This is another novel from the Big Bang challenge and it is just excellent. I was laughing out loud at sections and simply couldn't put it down. Mickey and Jackie are just so *them* and that's where the humour comes from. Their interaction with other characters from the series (and from the Sarah Jane series) was wonderful because so much of the humour in this fic is about people and their reactions to the weirdness around them.
The clever thing is how well it all fits into the established canon while bringing in characters that hadn't been introduced in the Doctor Who canon at the time this fic is set. As well having a good eye for characterisation, humour and dialogue, Netgirl writes a good plot that makes complete sense for our heroes and wouldn't be completely out of place in Doctor Who canon. It's long, it's plotty and it's just pure fun.

The variety of stories that she tells within the story arch of 'Facets' is also great.

Review: This is a really interesting story, marrying up the two versions of Human Nature and making them both exist in the same canon. Which I wouldn't have thought was possible, but Pete Galey not only does it really well, but adds in other Doctor Who elements that seem to contradict and makes them make sense too.
So not only is it very clever, but it's also very well written. Although it references a lot of Doctor Who mythology, you don't have to know it all for it to make sense.

Review: This is a fic that I read because it sounded interesting but I didn't think that I would actually review it. A Doctor/River fic published within a few days of the episode? Why would I want to do that?
The thing is that this is a great fic. It plays around with the idea of a non-linear life to explain so much about the Doctor and River. It keeps both of them in character and extrapolates what they might be like at various stages of their life in a way that's completely believable. Time travel stories are inevitably difficult to construct because the core story-line has to be kept in mind while taking snapshots from it and mixing them up. So to have a story written this well that makes sense and leaves you genuinely caring for everyone is a treat.

It's a pairing that has a bit of basis in canon (if you include Confidential information in the canon) but it isn't one that I would have sought out if it hadn't been for the Big Bang. Mickey/Jake works much better than I ever would have imagined.
The writing is great, conveying the building feelings while keeping Mickey in character. Tanni has an ear for the character voices that comes out really well. She fleshes out the alternate world that we saw glimpses of and works through what the series barely touched on: what was it like for Mickey settling in a world so familiar so strange? It's the relationship that takes centre stage but not at the expense of plot or motivation or even conflict. This is no PWP, instead it's a romance with plenty of other things going on to make it into a compelling, satisfying story.

Review: It's almost Aliens Made Us Do It, which I love, but there's a great twist in it. And, of course, this is Ian and Barbara. The situation they're in is amusing, as is all four of their reactions to it.

Plot: Post Runaway Bride/pre-Smith & Jones/pre-Sarah Jane Adventures story. The Tenth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith meet again a few months after School Reunion. Special guest appearance of another old friend from Classic days.
Review: The Doctor is interestingly alien in this, as the things he goes through are almost human, but not quite. I like the small hints we see of the life that Sarah has and what she gets up to. I especially like the relationships between the characters - they're layered so that they're not really one thing or another, but fit the characters well.
Mostly, this is just really well written - it pulled me in and I couldn't put it down. The best part is that there's a (longer) sequel and another sequel to that that has just started being put up at the time of writing.

Plot: The Chalet School has three new pupils. Sarah Jane is ambivalent; Ace has been coerced by the Doctor, and Jo is just thrilled to be at boarding school at last. Meanwhile, Barbara Wright joins the school as a mistress. Mysterious weather and strange doings make this a term to remember.
Review: For some reason, the TARDIS Big Bang challenge managed to produce two Chalet School cross-overs and they are both excellent. This one is quite different to Paranoidangel's fic and equally good.
It reads just like a Chalet School book (complete with potted histories so that a non-CS fan should easily pick it up) but the Doctor Who elements are there from the beginning as well. Although it is an AU, there is nothing in it that couldn't be canon in either series with a tiny bit of nudging. I would need to check on characters' ages, but I suspect that even the time-lines mesh. Hhertzof manages to get several incarnations of the Doctor and several past companions into the story without jarring and adds in a good plot with both DW and CS elements combined. The characterisation is great and it's a completely absorbing novel-length fic. Reserve a couple of afternoons and enjoy it.

Plot: AU. In the 1930s in Austria, Sarah Jane Smith comes to the Chalet School to teach while looking for a journalism job, and Harry Sullivan takes a job at the nearby Sanatorium. They meet and fall in love, but with these two it's never going to be that simple.
Review: Usually I have a rule that I don't rec people that I've had anything to do with beta-ing or people that I might be a bit biased about. PA is my partner in crime on the reviews so she should definitely fall into this category.
The problem is that this is an excellent fic. She makes the cross-over - possibly the least likely I'd heard of - work and she does it in a completely different way from hhertzof's DW/CS cross-over. The relationship between Sarah and Harry feels just right for them. There are enough details and background for people not familiar with Chalet School to understand it but you can definitely see that this is a DW AU as well. It fits into the CS canon and PA gives the Doctor Who regulars motivations and ideas that slot in perfectly without losing the core of those characters. Read this as a great, addictive novel and enjoy.

Review: It's so funny. It's written in the style of a children's book (complete with pictures) and tells the story of Draco's travels with the Doctor. Except Draco's not your ordinary companion and it's interesting to see his reactions to everything and what the Doctor tries to impress him. My favourite bits are the asides that explain the Doctor's pout more thoroughly and more amusingly.

Plot: The first time for him is not the first time for the Doctor.
Review: The reason I initially clicked into this was because Raven used that first line as her summary and it intrigued me so much. The idea of a Doctor Who/Harry Potter cross-over seemed odd, the pairing didn't really catch me, but that first sentence did.
I'm pleased to report that the rest of the fic lives up to that first sentence. The beauty of time travel is that things aren't necessarily linear and that's something Raven plays with well. The writing is what really makes this fic work because it does appear on the surface to be an odd combination of fandoms and pairings. Raven writes it so well though, with a deft touch for the deeper ideas that she only hints at, that you can be persuaded that this really does work. She also has a great feel for the characters and what they're doing, which makes this a great combination.

Plot: And one time that has yet to occur. When a man bound to the slow path is the oldest of humankind, it's only natural he should run into a man who can travel anywhere, anywhen. A crossover of Highlander and Doctor Who, with a smidge of Torchwood and a dash of AU.
Review: A Highlander/Doctor Who/Torchwood cross-over shouldn't work when just listed that way, but this one really does. I love the ideas in it and Kesomon has a style that blends the humour of the situation perfectly with the action. This isn't laugh out loud funny because the humour comes out of the relationships and, most of all, Methos' outlook on everything. If you're looking for a fun, entertaining fic with great characterisation then this is the one for you.

Review: It really made me think about Doctor Who and Hitchhiker's and the parallels between the two. In this story Ford and the Doctor play the Doctor role to their companions: Arthur and Donna. This crossover is a bit like if you stuck Ford and Arthur in the Doctor Who world, this is what it (and they) would be like, and if you stuck the Doctor and Donna in the Hitchhiker's world, this is what it (and they) would be like. Seeing all four of them interact is really interesting. It's funny, like Hitchhiker's and funny like Doctor Who and all in character.

The plot was really interesting - I couldn't tell what the solution to the mystery was going to be, but I enjoyed finding out.
The Doctor was his usual self and I liked seeing how Abby reacted to seeing him and how she convinced the rest of her team about the alien aspect of it. I loved Harry's part in it - he fit in so well.

Review: This is an AU of the final three minutes of Torchwood - the author describes it as a blatantly self-indulgent AU, but it was well-written and an interesting alternative. She caught the character voices very well and I could hear the Doctor talking as I read. The interaction between Jack and the other Torchwood members felt right, in keeping with what we've seen. Although this is definitely a Jack/Ianto fic from Ianto's, it isn't rewriting the episode to give that relationship a bigger role, instead finding the reasons and hints behind it. As an alternative to the canon it raises some interesting ideas and gives us a new outlook on a few things.

Plot: The Doctor thought he was alone in the universe -- but Torchwood is about to prove him wrong.
Review: I have already review several Sam fics so I was determined that I wouldn't be reviewing this one. Unfortunately, it's so good that I failed entirely in my policy of trying not to review the same author too many times.
Sam always has a lightness of touch with his writing that makes everything a joy to read. That's not to say that he can't be serious when needed, but he's never plodding and never less than highly entertaining. I loved the idea behind this fic and there are some moments in it that are so beautifully described your heart almost breaks. He contrasts that with some moments when you just want to laugh out loud because of the way he describes reactions and situations. Sam has an eye for beauty in writing and also a finely developed sense of the ridiculous.
The core idea of this fic, which I fell in love with, is central to the plot so I can't go into much detail without spoiling the first chapter. I hope that it's enough to say that this is one of those fics that should not be passed over even if you're only mildly aware of both shows.

Review: There's a long-running joke in The Bill fandom that when a character vanishes suddenly from the programme never to be seen again they're in the stationery cupboard. TREV is an acronym for Totally Reliable Extra Veteran - or a fancy way of saying extra who is in quite a few episodes in the background.
Catbert takes this idea and makes it ridiculous, although plausible. The only trouble is it's so short I really can't say any more about it without spoiling it any more than I have already.
