Review: The worlds of Buffy and Doctor Who fit together really well in this. It's interesting to see Dawn's opinions of the Doctor, Jack and Rose. It is quite funny with Jack being Jack more than once. I also really liked how the remix subtitle was so clever, since it means something in both fandoms.

Plot: After being dropped off at the end of The Hand Of Fear, Sarah finally makes it back home.
Review: It's hard to say much about this because it's quite short. But there's a lovely sweet relationship between Sarah and Harry in here. There's also a whole load of things that make you think what would have happened to Sarah's house while she was away. There is some dodgy puncuation going on there but given that I'd read it a few times before I noticed, it's good enough to overlook.

Review: This is the Brigadier's story mostly, and he's great in it. He might be older, but he's still doing the same old stuff and the characterisation of him in this is excellent. It's interesting to see how his way of doing things differs from what we see the characters in the new series do. The last line's particularly good too.

Review: This is the fic that introduced me to the whole Girl!Doctor idea. In it, the Doctor panics, understandably, and ends up at Sarah Jane's, who is entirely practical, as you'd expect really as someone who's spent time with the Fourth Doctor. I really the Doctor in this, as she worries about all sorts of things she's never previously considered. And their shopping trip is quite funny.

Plot: So much for leaving at Christmas . . .
Review: This fic fills in that gap between The Christmas Invasion and New Earth, stretching that period out a bit and thereby fixing a some minor continuity...errors.
It's an interesting fic because it captures the newly regenerated Ten perfectly. Cryptile has thought about the character and his transition and put it into words that fit. There are some great images in here, particularly the graffiti (needs to be read to understand), and some interesting insights into the other characters. At heart, though, it's about the Doctor and finishing the transition that began in The Christmas Invasion.

Plot: An old friend needs Jack's help. Is her disappearance a result of something he did in the 1950's or is the legend of Lake Ronkonkoma to blame? Or perhaps something even more sinister? Jack, Tosh, and Ianto attempt to find out what happened in time to save his friend.
Review: What I particularly enjoyed about this story is that although half of it is set in the past, with Jack as the only character we know, the mystery is so intriguing that the story could have not had any elements in the present at all and I'd still have been hooked. Of course, the present elements improve it, and without them the mystery would never have been solved.
The original characters are really well written and are interesting to read in their own right.

Review: I love the subtle humour in this, it gives the piece a great style while being quite ordinary, really. Well, as ordinary as someone like Sarah Jane can get, anyway. Most of the humour comes from Sarah's observations on the Doctor. That it's all in character just makes it funnier. And K9 totally steals the show.

Review: This is four short stories that are all different but all fit together. They're also all slightly differently themed. Autumn has an ending that leaves a lump in your throat and then to counteract it winter has the Doctor and Romana with one of their usual arguments. Review: 'Read this because it's one of the few Doctor Who fics that haven't made me cringe' possibly isn't the best recommendation, until you realise how rare it is for me to read Doctor Who fic and just how bad some of the things that I've been venturing into have been. This is really a very good fic.
It's set immediately after Captain Jack joins the TARDIS crew. I've noticed that Captain Jack, one of my favourite characters, seems to be a difficult one for fanfic authors to get a decent handle on. He too often descends into caricature - the author of this fic gets him just right and conveys the beginnings of a friendship with the Doctor beautifully. It had the same kind of tone as the episodes and provides a nice tag to the episode, filling in details that the show writers brushed over.

Review: This is just lovely, fun piece between Martha, the Doctor, Jack and next season's spoilery companion. Often fics that are a series of phone calls, texts and messages don't work - it's a tough medium to write in - but this one really does. It tells a story, it's laugh out loud funny and it tells us a little about the characters, too. The author has captured the voices and made it all feel real, even though the story is told entirely in dialogue. If you're looking for a fun fic to while away half an hour, this is one for you.

Review: This reads like it could be an episode of Doctor Who. There's some lovely stuff between the Doctor and Sarah Jane, and great Sarah Jane stuff in general. There's a mystery, or possibly more than one and the whole question of whether the Doctor can work it out in time, or whether Sarah will get there first.
There's only two bad things about this. First, it's written in American English - I just can't see Sarah saying words like gotten, but the whole thing is good enough to overlook the comparitively few words of American English. The second bad thing is that reading this story really made me want to eat chocolate!

Review: I'm always a sucker for a good Five Things fic, so this was a good read. It's primarily the 9th and 10th Doctors, but KickAir incorporates elements from original and new series without difficulty. You don't strictly need to have watched the original series, but a couple of the Things will have more resonance if you're familiar with it. KickAir comes up with some interesting potential AUs, the first one probably being my least favourite and I thoroughly enjoyed the rest. The second has echoes of an 'Age of Steel' question that I've been discussing with friends lately and it's always good to see Sarah-Jane return.
If you're looking for decent Doctor Who fic and enjoy Five Things fics, you'll probably find at least a couple of Things that you really enjoy here.

Plot: With the Master in power and the Doctor missing, a diary, a watch and an old wedding gift send Donna Noble, Sarah Jane Smith and Clyde Langer on a mission to save a planet. But the planet they are saving may not be their own.
Review: This story was hard in places, not because of bad writing but because it deals with the Year That Never Was. When you start to examine that idea in detail you start to appreciate the full horror of what happened to the world in that time and Meddow does a great job with it. She doesn't leave everything hopeless, though. As with the episode, there is a spark of hope in the darkness.
The most interesting thing is that this fic doesn't deal with any of the characters we see on screen, but rather with how Donna, Sarah Jane and the other SJA characters fare during the time. The characterisation is just right and the ideas are huge but well done. It's a fic that stays with you long after finishing and the writing captures the heart of the ideas.

Review: This is set just after 'The End of the World', so there are a few spoilers for that episode. There are also a couple of references to classic Doctor Who episodes, but at a level where readers new to Doctor Who won't have any trouble. In fact, that's one of the things that this fic does well - giving little nods for classic DW fans but keeping it just as enjoyable and readable for new fans.
What stood out in this fic was the understanding of the relationship between Rose and the Doctor - how different and similar they are at the same time. It's used to great effect here and really is the basis for the trip that the Doctor takes Rose on. If you're looking for a well-written fic reads between the lines of the characters, this is for you.

Plot: Jackie and Mickey save the day by bickering, drinking lots of tea and spending a lot of time in the pub in the middle of the day.
Review: This is another novel from the Big Bang challenge and it is just excellent. I was laughing out loud at sections and simply couldn't put it down. Mickey and Jackie are just so *them* and that's where the humour comes from. Their interaction with other characters from the series (and from the Sarah Jane series) was wonderful because so much of the humour in this fic is about people and their reactions to the weirdness around them.
The clever thing is how well it all fits into the established canon while bringing in characters that hadn't been introduced in the Doctor Who canon at the time this fic is set. As well having a good eye for characterisation, humour and dialogue, Netgirl writes a good plot that makes complete sense for our heroes and wouldn't be completely out of place in Doctor Who canon. It's long, it's plotty and it's just pure fun.

Which I wouldn't have thought was possible, but Pete Galey not only does it really well, but adds in other Doctor Who elements that seem to contradict and makes them make sense too.
So not only is it very clever, but it's also very well written. Although it references a lot of Doctor Who mythology, you don't have to know it all for it to make sense.

Review: I particularly like that this is an adventure with the Fourth Doctor and Sarah and is gen. There's not enough of it out there, so it's good that this is a particularly good example.
It's really easy to read and you forget how long it is, when you read it. I do like Sarah in it, being her typical self and doing exactly what you'd expect her to do, rather than what anyone else tells her to do.
The plot's not really new, but that doesn't matter because it's the way it's done that is. In the heat of thinking they're going to die, no one declares their love for each other and none of their emotions are too over the top.

Review: This has Rose living in the parallel world an learning how to live. Sheldrake's got Rose down really well, along with the rest of her family. There's also an interesting Sarah Jane in there.
There's some great moments with an alien device and a green librarian that are quite humorous.

Plot: A quiet walk across the ice fields of Kos turns into more than either the Doctor or Rose planned for.
Review: This was written early on in the series but the story is good enough that any little things that have been made AU are easy to overlook. It's got some nice stuff between the Doctor and Rose, as well as an interesting plot. It reads like a short episode, the characterisation is spot-on and the story is a fairly typical Doctor Who mystery.

Plot: Post Runaway Bride/pre-Smith & Jones/pre-Sarah Jane Adventures story. The Tenth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith meet again a few months after School Reunion. Special guest appearance of another old friend from Classic days.
Review: The Doctor is interestingly alien in this, as the things he goes through are almost human, but not quite. I like the small hints we see of the life that Sarah has and what she gets up to. I especially like the relationships between the characters - they're layered so that they're not really one thing or another, but fit the characters well.
Mostly, this is just really well written - it pulled me in and I couldn't put it down. The best part is that there's a (longer) sequel and another sequel to that that has just started being put up at the time of writing.

Plot: The Chalet School has three new pupils. Sarah Jane is ambivalent; Ace has been coerced by the Doctor, and Jo is just thrilled to be at boarding school at last. Meanwhile, Barbara Wright joins the school as a mistress. Mysterious weather and strange doings make this a term to remember.
Review: For some reason, the TARDIS Big Bang challenge managed to produce two Chalet School cross-overs and they are both excellent. This one is quite different to Paranoidangel's fic and equally good.
It reads just like a Chalet School book (complete with potted histories so that a non-CS fan should easily pick it up) but the Doctor Who elements are there from the beginning as well. Although it is an AU, there is nothing in it that couldn't be canon in either series with a tiny bit of nudging. I would need to check on characters' ages, but I suspect that even the time-lines mesh. Hhertzof manages to get several incarnations of the Doctor and several past companions into the story without jarring and adds in a good plot with both DW and CS elements combined. The characterisation is great and it's a completely absorbing novel-length fic. Reserve a couple of afternoons and enjoy it.

Plot: The Doctor pouted. Draco wasn't impressed.
Review: It's so funny. It's written in the style of a children's book (complete with pictures) and tells the story of Draco's travels with the Doctor. Except Draco's not your ordinary companion and it's interesting to see his reactions to everything and what the Doctor tries to impress him. My favourite bits are the asides that explain the Doctor's pout more thoroughly and more amusingly.

Plot: And one time that has yet to occur. When a man bound to the slow path is the oldest of humankind, it's only natural he should run into a man who can travel anywhere, anywhen. A crossover of Highlander and Doctor Who, with a smidge of Torchwood and a dash of AU.
Review: A Highlander/Doctor Who/Torchwood cross-over shouldn't work when just listed that way, but this one really does. I love the ideas in it and Kesomon has a style that blends the humour of the situation perfectly with the action. This isn't laugh out loud funny because the humour comes out of the relationships and, most of all, Methos' outlook on everything. If you're looking for a fun, entertaining fic with great characterisation then this is the one for you.

Review: It really made me think about Doctor Who and Hitchhiker's and the parallels between the two. In this story Ford and the Doctor play the Doctor role to their companions: Arthur and Donna. This crossover is a bit like if you stuck Ford and Arthur in the Doctor Who world, this is what it (and they) would be like, and if you stuck the Doctor and Donna in the Hitchhiker's world, this is what it (and they) would be like. Seeing all four of them interact is really interesting. It's funny, like Hitchhiker's and funny like Doctor Who and all in character.

Review: I've never seen an episode of NCIS, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this story. The crossover fits perfectly with Doctor Who canon and ended up making me want to know more about Abby. The plot was really interesting - I couldn't tell what the solution to the mystery was going to be, but I enjoyed finding out.
The Doctor was his usual self and I liked seeing how Abby reacted to seeing him and how she convinced the rest of her team about the alien aspect of it. I loved Harry's part in it - he fit in so well.

Plot: Trev is really a time lord.
Review: There's a long-running joke in The Bill fandom that when a character vanishes suddenly from the programme never to be seen again they're in the stationery cupboard. TREV is an acronym for Totally Reliable Extra Veteran - or a fancy way of saying extra who is in quite a few episodes in the background.
Catbert takes this idea and makes it ridiculous, although plausible. The only trouble is it's so short I really can't say any more about it without spoiling it any more than I have already.
