Touching the Void

Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: NC-17
Type: Slash
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Themes: Drama
Reviewed by: paranoidangel
Reviewer's home URL: Angelic Paranoia
Dated added: 04-05-2009
Length: Over 100KB
Plot: When Ianto finds himself in wartime London and in the clutches of a strange but familiar conman, he struggles to find a balance between revealing the future and creating a paradox. Meanwhile, Jack tries to get Ianto back while dealing with a head full of memories that aren't his own.
Review: I find it hard to be convinced by most Jack/Ianto stories, so the fact that I'm reviewing this tells you how good it was. Because it's set in two different times, one with the Jack we see in Doctor Who and the other with the Jack we see in Torchwood, it's good to see the differences between them. And there are a lot of differences, which Ianto spots too.
It's those differences, along with the explanation of them that make this story so interesting.

Forgetting the Nightmare

Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: R
Type: Slash
Pairing: Ninth Doctor/Jack
Themes: Drama, first time, vignette
Reviewed by: Selenay

Dated added: 03-07-2005
Length: 10-40KB
Plot: Wherein neither Jack nor the Doctor can get any sleep, but for very different reasons.
Review: The plot outline sounds like this should be a pure, unplotty PWP. Except there's plot and it's the ideas and characterisation that make this fic stand out.
Casira has a good handle on the Doctor and Jack - quite rare - and manages to write an R-rated fic without losing sight of that. It's short but doesn't feel rushed, well-written and has an atmosphere that is just right.

Plot: 'I am the storyteller at the end of time. I know how it ends. It ends like this...'
Review: There is a dreamy quality about this fic that makes it beautiful. It's Martha and Romana I at the end of the world, which shouldn't work but really does.

'literally, stars in their eyes'

Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: PG-13
Type: Slash
Pairing: Doctor/Master
Themes: Humor

Dated added: 15-04-2007
Length: Under 10 KB
Plot: The universe isn't big enough for the two of them. AU after Claws of Axos.
Review: This is funny. Of course the Doctor and the Master stuck together would argue and the Master would try to kill the Doctor, but it's the way he's does it, and mostly the way livii describes it that makes it so funny. I don't really like the Master that much, but I really liked this story.

Pairing: Martha/Romana II

Length: 10-40KB
Plot: A non-linear love story.
Review: This fic does exactly what is says in the summary, but it does it really well. It's well-written with good characterisation and just the right touch of humour. As an exploration of a slightly unusual relationship complicated by crossing time-streams, the fic works really well without getting confusing. We know approximately where in each time line we are at all times and she matches the characterisation to that. It's a great little fic.

In the Absence

Pairing: Romana II/Rose
Themes: Angst, AU, first time, H/C

Length: 10-40KB
Plot: Torchwood gets an alien visitor, but it's not the one Rose has been waiting for.
Review: Pulling off a ship fic between two characters who have never met in canon is tough, but this author did a great job. I love her Rose and she did a superb job with Romana II. It's not really an introspective fic, yet at the same time it is thoughtful and insightful. It is also a fic with an interesting core idea that is done well and keeps you glued. Even with my limited knowledge of Romana II I knew what was happening and why without any clunky exposition. A great little fic.

Pairing: Nyssa/Tegan
Themes: H/C, vignette

Plot: The annoying thing about Nyssa, the really annoying thing, was that it was impossible to stay angry at her for any length of time.
Review: This fic surprised me by making the pairing believable. Netgirl gets under the skin of Tegan and presents a Nyssa that's a little easier to like than the one we often see. It's a short piece, but it packs a lot into a few words.

Tanni

Momentum

Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: NC-17

Plot: Mickey's trying his very best to adjust to life in another world, but the discovery of an artefact that could change the fate of the Earth and unexpected budding feelings aren't making it any easier.
Review: The Big Bang challenge produced a lot of great DW fanfic novels and this is just one of them. It's a pairing that has a bit of basis in canon (if you include Confidential information in the canon) but it isn't one that I would have sought out if it hadn't been for the Big Bang. Mickey/Jake works much better than I ever would have imagined.
The writing is great, conveying the building feelings while keeping Mickey in character. Tanni has an ear for the character voices that comes out really well. She fleshes out the alternate world that we saw glimpses of and works through what the series barely touched on: what was it like for Mickey settling in a world so familiar so strange? It's the relationship that takes centre stage but not at the expense of plot or motivation or even conflict. This is no PWP, instead it's a romance with plenty of other things going on to make it into a compelling, satisfying story.

Raven

Shelter From The Storm

Fandom: Doctor Who, Harry Potter (cross-over)
Rating: PG
Type: Slash
Pairing: Tenth Doctor/Remus
Themes: Angst, drama, H/C
Reviewed by: Selenay

Dated added: 19-05-2006
Length: 10-40KB
Plot: The first time for him is not the first time for the Doctor.
Review: The reason I initially clicked into this was because Raven used that first line as her summary and it intrigued me so much. The idea of a Doctor Who/Harry Potter cross-over seemed odd, the pairing didn't really catch me, but that first sentence did.
I'm pleased to report that the rest of the fic lives up to that first sentence. The beauty of time travel is that things aren't necessarily linear and that's something Raven plays with well. The writing is what really makes this fic work because it does appear on the surface to be an odd combination of fandoms and pairings. Raven writes it so well though, with a deft touch for the deeper ideas that she only hints at, that you can be persuaded that this really does work. She also has a great feel for the characters and what they're doing, which makes this a great combination.

E. E. Beck

Shiny Prize

Fandom: Doctor Who, Torchwood (cross-over)

Plot: “Bilis, you think?” she asked tensely.
Review: This is an AU of the final three minutes of Torchwood - the author describes it as a blatantly self-indulgent AU, but it was well-written and an interesting alternative. She caught the character voices very well and I could hear the Doctor talking as I read. The interaction between Jack and the other Torchwood members felt right, in keeping with what we've seen. Although this is definitely a Jack/Ianto fic from Ianto's, it isn't rewriting the episode to give that relationship a bigger role, instead finding the reasons and hints behind it. As an alternative to the canon it raises some interesting ideas and gives us a new outlook on a few things.

Sam Vines

The Doctor And Mr. Jones

Fandom: Doctor Who, Torchwood (cross-over)
Rating: R
Type: Slash
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Themes: Action/adventure, drama, ER
Reviewed by: Selenay

Dated added: 24-02-2008
Length: 2-10 chapters, most parts over 25KB
Plot: The Doctor thought he was alone in the universe -- but Torchwood is about to prove him wrong.
Review: I have already review several Sam fics so I was determined that I wouldn't be reviewing this one. Unfortunately, it's so good that I failed entirely in my policy of trying not to review the same author too many times.
Sam always has a lightness of touch with his writing that makes everything a joy to read. That's not to say that he can't be serious when needed, but he's never plodding and never less than highly entertaining. I loved the idea behind this fic and there are some moments in it that are so beautifully described your heart almost breaks. He contrasts that with some moments when you just want to laugh out loud because of the way he describes reactions and situations. Sam has an eye for beauty in writing and also a finely developed sense of the ridiculous.
The core idea of this fic, which I fell in love with, is central to the plot so I can't go into much detail without spoiling the first chapter. I hope that it's enough to say that this is one of those fics that should not be passed over even if you're only mildly aware of both shows.
