Plot: SG-1 encounter a race who hold somewhat different views and values to their own.
Review: One of the things that I love about Stargate (show and fanfiction) is the interesting new worlds and races that they explore. This story is no exception. Alison has created a race with a fascinating social dynamic that made me keep reading to find out exactly what they are. She also has a good handle on the characters and their interactions so that I could see and hear them as I read. The story has the right balance between the romance and the adventure and as you can tell, I really enjoyed reading it.

Review: I am so glad that Alo has now finished this so that I can rec it. The first part stuck in my mind so it was a real pleasure to read the rest. It's well-written with great dialogue and some great, memorable original characters. It's hard to write OC's and I was impressed by the ones in this story. Plot: A familiar alien encounter brings Jack and Daniel to their senses.
Review: Damn, I'm being bitten on the ass by my own summary rules - one of the things that I love about this fic is one of the things I can't talk about because it gives some of the plot away *sigh*
This is set after 'The Curse' in season 4, which is not an easy time to write for Jack and Daniel. Alo has managed to capture Jack and Daniel's voices just right as well as creating an absorbing story that adds some great insight into their characters. Nor has she forgotten the other members of the team because their voices are heard just as well.
A lot of what I love about this story is the plot I can't tell you about :-) but it's also the relationship built during the story. This is one of the stories that was bid for during the Moonridge Auction and Alo says that it's not something she would normally write - she managed to fulfill the requirements just fine, IMHO.

Plot: Daniel's diary over a year at the SGC.
Review: Um, what can I say about this? I have yet to meet a J/D fan who didn't get a giggle out of this, if not an outright guffaw. We've cleared coffee shops discussing this series at the tops our voices. We've all had bleary eyed mornings after staying up until 4am on a work night reading (well, I have). The characters are exaggerations of the characters we all love and the situations are just side-splitting. It's closer to a parody than a serious fic but it's almost impossible not to love it. You'll laugh, you'll cheer, you'll yell at your screen sometimes, but you'll keep reading until the last word.
Not for the humour impaired :)
There's also a parallel 'Jack's Journal' at the same site.

Review: Sometimes Anais' characterisation doesn't match up with what I see on-screen but I'm laughing so hard I don't care. This one is different - the characerisation is great and the story is a haunting, memorable one. She gives 'screen' time to Sam (unusual in J/D slash) and has a fascinating central plot. Jack and Daniel's relationship is also fascinating and I loved Jack's gradual examination of his feelings. This is quite different from much of Anais' work, closer to 'Kawoosh' in tone, and I couldn't put it down even though I was reading it at a ridiculously late hour. I'm glad that someone reccomended this one to me on-list because I might have missed a wonderful fic.

Review: The basic idea of this story is what I loved the most about this. Yes, there was some good dialogue and lovely characterisation but the idea executed so well here that I couldn't resist reccing it. The Stargate should be a cool, 'would you lookit that?' thing but it's so easy for the extraordinary to become commonplace. Looking at this idea through their eyes was just wonderful.

Review: A couple of people told me that I should read this and they were right. This is, quite simply, one of the most interesting explorations of the quantum mirror idea that I've read. It's also very well-written, has good characterisation and all the characters are given equal time in the fic, very unusual in a slash fic.
It's one of those fics where I began it and was hooked within a couple of paragraphs, finishing it despite a rumbling stomach and pesky cat. The slash isn't the important part here; it's the musings on the nature of the quantum mirror and the infinite alternative realities out there that are the core of this fic. The slash is just the icing on a very good cake.
If you want a fic that has some interesting ideas on reality and philosophy and manages to be a team slash fic, then get thee hence and read this fic.

Review: I knew I was going to rec this after only a few paragraphs. It's a different tone to Biblio's early work reflecting the changes she's made as a writer and it's already replaced Owing Silence as my favourite :-)
This is an honest, interesting study of all the characters in early season 4. Biblio has given some explanations for some of the attitudes we've had trouble with and they work brilliantly. The dialogue is up to her usual great standard and the characterisation is spot-on. There's a slightly darker tone to it, maybe honest is the word I'm looking for here, that works particularly well in this time-frame. Jack and Daniel's characters are front and centre as you'd expect, but Sam, Teal'c and even Hammond are given time and study as well. I couldn't put this down until I'd finished the last word and you won't be able to either.
I'm not sure what else I can say to persuade you to go and read a fascinating, intense, beautiful study of all our favourite characters. Maybe I should add that the sex is really hot, too? :-)

Review: I'm reccing another Blaze story :-) I seem to be on a roll here. So far, Blaze is the best author I've found for writing Sam/Janet stuff. This one has her gentle humour and beautiful characterisation, leaving me with a sappy grin on my face at the end that cheered me right up after a couple of encounters with bad fics.
This is set very early in the series and I absolutely adore her portrayal of Sam and Janet. Drunk on off-world alcohol is one of those fandom cliches that either works really well or doesn't work at all. This one is in the former catagory. Blaze is fairly deprecating about it, but I think it works just fine. Go, read and enjoy.

WoO is an ep that causes problems for some Jack/Daniel fans, but it's also a fun episode and I remembered that this fic took away some of the sting from one or two scenes. So, of course, I had to hunt it down and rec it :-)
No Consequences is a short, fun fic with a little dose of angst to spice things up. It neatly explains the more problematic parts of WoO without removing anything and adds some lovely touches. NC-17 is probably too high a rating because it's more about the emotions than anything graphic, but that's more than fine with me.

Review: As the summary says, this is a fic about one of the great fandom cliches - telepathy. Why have I recced this? Because it is so damn good :-)
The trick with using a fandom cliche is using it in a unique way that really sticks out in the mind. This one did - I remembered the fic over a year later when I was discussing telepathy with a listsib. Then I couldn't work out why I hadn't recced it until I realised that it probably came out before I started writing Stargate recs.
Catspaw and Sharon have managed to capture all the characters brilliantly. As this is a Jack/Daniel story, it concentrates on those characters but the rest are definitely there too, as well as a couple of great OCs. The dialogue and writing were great, but what really stands out is the work they put into really looking at how telepathy might affect the characters in an established relationship. Telepathy is usually a plot device for first time fics, so this was a wonderful departure, and they were able to look at Jack and Daniel's relationship as well as playing around with the plot.
In short, I love this and you should too :-)

Plot: When Daniel is kidnapped by slave traders, Jack has to make alliances with people he neither likes nor trusts to get him back.
Review: Considering the subject matter, this fic is surprisingly sweet in places. It's also raw and painful in places, and that combination makes for a fascinating, enjoyable fic. ELG and Brenda create some wonderful visuals so that you can really see the story as it unfolds. They also capture Jack and Daniel's characters wonderfully with some great dialogue. I first read this over a year ago and my only excuse for not reccing it sooner is laziness - I'm slowly going through my back catalogue of fics that I want to rec but read before the review archive expanded. The fact that this fic stuck in my mind and has been read several times since I first found it should indicate how good it is.

Plot: Jack and Daniel come out...and not everyone takes the news well.
Review: There are a lot of fics where Jack and Daniel announce that they're together and everyone is very happy for them, not a hint of homophobia anywhere. This ain't one of those.
Having said that, it's a thought provoking and intense fic that stuck in my mind for a long time. It was mentioned on a list a few days ago and I checked the recs page and suddenly realised that I hadn't recced this. No idea why, because it's an excellent fic and I usually try to rec something when I read it. Obviously this went on the 'to do' list and didn't get done, like a lot of older fics that I keep meaning to rec. Grr.
If you don't like seeing a Sam who isn't very sympathetic then don't read this, but Eos has done an amazing thing - she's given reasons and motivation, even for things that I might not have been able to. Everything that the characters do (Sam, the OCs, Jack, Daniel, etc.) is with good motivation and keeps to canon characterisation. This isn't any easy fic to read, but one I heartily recommend.

Plot: The quantum mirror presents some curious issues for Sam and the rest of the team after Doctor Janet Fraiser's death.
Review: I'm a huge fan of Janet, so Heroes was hard to watch for me. I'm also a big fan of quantum mirror stories. This fic deals with both of those issues, it's by Harriet and it's a wonderfully long, detailed fic - ingredients that pretty much guaranteed I'd be reccing it.
I have to admit that this is one that I DL'd to read later, thereby forgetting what the plot summary and getting a nice surprise about two pages down :-) Harriet succeeds in dealing with an AU Janet that's recognisable and at the same time not our Janet - although still a Janet that I love. She also deals well with all the issues that this brings up. More importantly, there's a wonderful 'voice' to all the characters and particularly for Sam and Janet. Their relationship develops perfectly, neither rushed or bogged down, and I simply could not put this fic down when I'd started to read it (even though I should have eaten hours ago). You won't regretting putting aside a couple of hours for this one because it's a great fic.

Review: I'm rapidly becoming a Harriet fan. This is her first story at Area 52 and it shows her talent for creating a warm, believable friendship and relationship between Sam and Janet. She also creates a great OC and fleshes out Cassie's character a little. The problem with many Sam/Janet fics is that it's difficult to capture their chemistry, but it jumps off the page here. It's a lovely fic that kept me absorbed until the last word.

Review: First, I should point out that I am a sucker for telepathy stories and that might have influenced my enjoyment of this one :-)
I should also point out that it's very difficult to make a cliche like that stand out because it's been done so many times. This one did stick in my mind and I've been waiting impatiently for Area 52 to return so that I could write the review. Harriet manages to take a cliche plot and do something new and interesting with it. Her insights to Sam and Janet's reactions are wonderful and really 'fit' for the characters. This PWP is very short and I can't quite explain why I'm reccing it - maybe it's just that I loved the zero-G thing? Maybe it's also the presence of a mischevious Daniel and an equally mischevious Jack. It could also be that this is my favourite out of the challenge responses. Or maybe it's because it's well-written and I could see everything as I read it. Plot: Daniel's memory since descension is still scattered, and Jack struggles to accept that Daniel may never be fully returned to them. Meanwhile, SG-1 have a more immediate problem to deal with; Loki, and his backlog of mistakes.
Review: I've had this sitting on my hard-drive, waiting for a free afternoon to indulge, for weeks and I'm glad that I've finally been able to read it. Good, novel-length fics are rare and deserve to be savoured. One of the things that has impressed me with this fic is how well Jonah interweaves several plot strands. Although the relationship between Jack and Daniel is important, it's not the sole focus of the fic. Finding a slash fic that has interesting, well-executed main plots in addition to the relationship subplot is always a huge treat for me.
This is written in third person from Jack's POV (I am so impressed with anyone who can stick with one POV throughout a fic this long) and, if anything, that makes the ideas about Daniel's memory recovery even more interesting. Everything is seen through Jack's eyes and Jonah has captured his voice. Daniel, also, gets good characerisation and I loved seeing his struggle with his memories through Jack's eyes. The main plots in this could almost be an episode (and a fascinating follow-up to Fragile Balance), the other characters get page time and the Jack/Daniel relationship is both gentle and non-sappy. Defintely a fic that's going on my favourites list.

Review: You know my thing about reccing WIPs? Well, I'm waiving that in order to rec this :-)
It's not really a WIP in a conventional sense. Each Interval can be read on its own, but they work much better in the series. The relationship between Jack and Daniel is fascinating and Joy has done a wonderful job of exploring the psychology and dynamic between them. The characterisation is spot-on and the dialogue is fantastic. What puts this above other series, for me, anyway, is that there are no rose-tinted glasses here - they make mistakes, they have to live with them and work out a way of getting past them. Joy doesn't change any of the canon events but she looks hard at the motivations behind them and ends up with an absorbing series.
Should I also mention that the sex is very hot? :-)

Review: Jonas is a much maligned character in Stargate, especially among the slashers, so it's great to find a fic that treats him well and shows the slightly dorky, adorable side of him. So far, it's the only Jonas fic that I've read and Kylie has managed to convince me that I may have to go looking for more. Jonas grew on me a lot during S6 and this fic captures him perfectly.
It's also an interesting look at the storyline of Fallen and how Arrom relates to Daniel Jackson. Kylie does a great job with this, conveying the confusion and reluctance that Arrom showed and exploring some of the reasons behind it.
I should also mention that it's rather steamy, the chemistry is there and Kylie doesn't forget the events of Meridian. Read this and be convinced of the potential in Daniel/Jonas.

Review: Another response to Ximeria's Sex on Base challenge, so you can pretty much guess the content :-)
There are a couple of reasons why I'm reccing this. First is that sex on base is very difficult to do convincingly - the logic and risks just keep slapping me in the face. But kylie (and Kiva and The Grrrl) both set up situations that work and overcome all the logic problems I usually have.
Secondly, Daniel does dirty talk. Now, usually I'm not a fan of fics with lots of dirty talk because it doesn't fit with the character and it's, frankly, not very well done. This is brilliant, 'reads' like Daniel and it's hot. One of the few times that I've ever seen it done well for either character and I loved it.
In short, this is a fun, sexy PWP and one of the rare ones that I've felt needed reccing.

Review: When two good, established writers co-author a story it either turns out to be a complete mess or a great story. Thankfully this takes the latter route :-)
Reason 1 to love this fic: Fascinating plot idea that is well-executed and would have held my interest even if there wasn't a Jack/Daniel plot to it. The alien at the heart of the A-plot was unusual, unique and interesting. Kylie and The Grrrl looked into the alien's thought processes (rare enough) and succeeded in making them suitably alien, but also understandable.
Reason 2 to love this fic: A great Jack/Daniel plot, with good voices for the characters, believable motivation and no 'the aleins made me do it' to be seen.
Reason 3 to love this fic: There were more characters than just Jack and Daniel involved in the fic, we saw one or two characters that rarely get seen in Jack/Daniel slash and they had stuff to do. Kylie and The Grrrl even got their voices.
Reason 4 to love this fic: Hot sex :-)

Review: I am almost positive that someone recommended this to me, but I can't remember who or where. After reading it, though, I can understand the rec and had to pass it on.
There are several things that I enjoyed about this fic. Nel has a good 'Daniel' voice - this is written in third person Daniel's POV and it works. That said, she hasn't neglected the rest of the team and their dialogue and reactions are just right, so I could see it all as I read. And that's one of the other things I like - it's rare to find good team pieces in slash fic. Usually authors concentrate on their pairing and neglect the rest of the team. Although this is Jack/Daniel, it also feels very much like a team piece. There is plot beyond Jack and Daniel's story, mixed together well so that I had to keep reading. This was also an interesting fic because it used a slightly different motivating point to get Daniel and Jack thinking - I won't tell you what it is because it would give away too much, but it was an idea that I've not seen explored in slash fic before. Lastly, their relationship was well written throughout and Nel doesn't stop working until the end.
Extra note: I am not the Sel in Nel's acknowledgement. Didn't want anyone to think I was pimping this because I had any hand in it :-)

The characterisation is spot-on and the chemistry between Sam and Janet sparkles. She even writes the other characters well, which is sometimes rare in slash. It's great to see friendship blossom and mature and I haven't been able to tear myself away from this for the past few evenings. Go read, now :)

Plot: A different take on certain episodes from Stargate's season 7.
Review: Certain season 7 episodes were very traumatic for any Sam/Janet fan, so seeing a Sam/Janet fic set around them is always going to interest me. Knowing that Heroes is going to come up keeps a certain amount of tension up and I'm not going to tell you which route RocketChick takes with it.
I particularly liked the use of certain points from Grace (particularly the character of Grace and Sam's other subconscious figures) to tell this story. It gave the whole thing a slightly more introspective feel than I might have expected, touching lightly on ideas about the inner pysche that aren't often explored in fanfic. The voices of all the characters were just right and I'll freely admit to a slightly teary moment in reading.

Review: There is a sad lack of good humour in Stargate fanfic, so it's quite a treat to find a humour fic that is actually funny. This has got an eye for the ridiculous, a lovely tongue-in-cheek voice and some classic lines. The slash is more implied than on-screen - this fic is more about some slightly deranged situations, mental images and a moose called Elvis.

Review: This fic should be really cliched - it starts four years into the future with Sam married and Jack with someone else, they've not seen each other for that long, they're still in love, yadda, yadda. Except, somehow, it's not.
Perhaps it's because the characterisation's great: you can almost feel the tension between Sam and Jack. The original characters are well fleshed out.
Perhaps it's the plot: it twists this back and forth so you just can't tell who is going to end up with who.
The one bad thing in this is an OC at the end who seemed so cliched he overrode the rest of the story at that point. But it's only a small niggle in a long story.

However, there was a discussion on-list about particular kinds of stories that push our buttons and this is one of the ones I love. I may have mentioned my love of telepathy stories - this combines telepathy (woo-hoo!) with the well-used 'hungover morning after' cliché to produce a fic that's a little different and that I adore. There is angst. There's telepathy used as a new and fascinating plot device. There's odds and ends of archaeology and Smart!Jack makes a welcome appearance. It's essentially a 'fill in the gaps' fic for 2010. It follows the storyline in the episode by filling in the bits we didn't see and trying to make sense of what we did see and it works. There's a slightly dark, unhappy tone to the sections set in 2010, appropriately, but this isn't a fic that will leave you in a state of deep depression. It will stay with you, though, and make you think about some of the ideas it raised long after you've finished. Terry has the 'voices' just right and even makes sense of the episode's slightly problematic Jack characterisation.

This one, though, is a beautiful one and, after reading the first paragraph, I just couldn't save it for later. Ximeria creates an incredible atmosphere in this fic, a mixture of tranquility and uncertainty that works perfectly for Daniel. This is written in third-person from Daniel's POV and Ximeria does a lovely job of working through his thought processes and internal dillemas. The descriptions and dialogue all work together to make you 'see' what you're reading. Her Jack is just right and there is just enough gentle humour to liven it up without allowing it to overwhelm the important parts of the story. Even the sex is well-written (not easy to do), being fun and steamy while keeping the atmosphere of the rest of the fic.
This is a beautiful, well-written story that captured me until I'd read the final word.

Review: I've been meaning to rec this for ages but a comment on a list yesterday reminded me and I had to wonder why the heck I hadn't got around to it.
This was one of the first J/D fics I read and I adored it - in a way, you could say it was one of the ones that got me searching out other fics. There are a few fics that I read in those early days that I go back to whenever I need a pick me up, and this is one of them. It's laugh-out-loud funny, so read it somewhere people won't want to know why you're laughing - there are just too many fantastic lines and images to quote. It's also sexy and sweet, and I adore her Jack and Daniel. Sam and Teal'c get a fair amount to do as well, something that is often missing in slash stories, and throughout there's a wonderful team vibe. I can't praise this enough :-)
There's a sequel, Truth or Dare, that is just as wonderful.

Plot: They had always wanted to fly; John couldn’t fly; Nioke flew for him.
Review: If you're reading this, then probably the first question on your mind is...His Dark Materials? With Atlantis?
Surprisingly, it works very well.
It's not a cross-over in the strictest, characters from the two fandoms meeting sense of the word. The fic is more of an Atlantis AU set within the logic of the His Dark Materials universe. So each of our Atlantis character has a daemon and elements of the HDM-universe are mentioned, but they're in the Pegasus galaxy fighting the Wraith.
The major reason to read this is just how well trinityofone has managed to integrate the two worlds and make it all work. It's a fascinating fic with some great characterisation, good world-building and plot ideas that will keep you glued to the final word.

Review: When I first read this I couldn't imagine any way that anyone could make this pairing work - but then roga does. Sheppard fits into the Star Trek universe really well and it's interesting to see him in that setting. Mostly I really liked the humour in it as Kirk hats the new guy and poor Bones has to put up with his friend going on about it and give Kirk advice.

Plot: Daniel is having trouble with a translation: it just doesn't make any sense. Who could he possibly call, but a friend he met a conference years ago who is the best linguist he has ever met.
Review: Cross-overs are tough to do well and, done badly, can end up a complete mess. This one is, thankfully, very good. Crossing Stargate with Highlander works surprisingly well. It does not require massive plot changes because ideas from both universes can be combined without re-writing canon. The only thing that the author did is to assume a different ending for the episode Archangel (Highlander) so that Richie Ryan is still alive - I'm certainly not complaining about that because I like Richie. Everything fits together perfectly.
Tasha also has a good grasp of all the characters. Duncan MacLeod does not appear, but the story does not really require him. The interactions between the characters from the two shows are well thought out and enjoyable to read.
I love a good, meaty plot and here the fic does not disappoint either. In fact, it uses ideas that make you think a little and it kept me hooked until I'd finished.

Review: Good femslash in Stargate is tough to come across, even though there are some great female characters. Sam/Elizabeth is one of those pairings that works when done well but just doesn't get done well often enough. chelle takes some of the ideas from the show (such as Sam's motorbike) and runs with them to add elements to the fic that are both totally in character but also not something we see often. Her writing for them is both gentle and passionate and you feel in the story with them.

Plot: Crack teams from various branches of the US military and government are sent on a retreat that promises a 'cooperative journey of self-discovery', but not everything is as it seems.
Review: First of all, this is damn funny. Side-splitting. Especially the views from each team of the other teams - in other words, they all think the other groups are nuts.
This is also well-written and you don't need to be familiar with all the fandoms to understand what is going on. I've never seen The Invisible Man, but I still understood the fic (although some of the IM humor might have been lost on me). Helena has an eye for the insanity of all the fandoms and makes this fic incredibly funny without losing any of the characterisations. It's tough to pull off a cross-over because of the leaps of logic required, but this works brilliantly. There's even a cool plot to go with it.
