Plot: Sydney, Weiss, a hotel room, and apologies to Rob Reiner.
Review: Essentially, Sydney and Weiss are in a bugged hotel room (luckily, voice only) and have to act like their cover story until Marshall can disconnect the bug. Unfortunately, their cover story is as a couple of lusty lovers. This involves much writing between the two of them as they wind each other up, both getting the other to act more and more outrageously. And since neither Sydney or Weiss can laugh out loud, it's up to the reader to do that part for them.

Review: I thought this fic was hysterical - it had me in stitches with it's shooting script-style and the descriptions of the actions. The best thing is that it works so well if you listen to the song while reading it! The author is a crazy genius! Her characterisation was just hilarious, picking up certain elements of the main characters with some laugh-out-loud funny lines. I haven't read anything this funny in forever! Tee-hee (still laughin').

Plot: Crossover Parody! 'Okay, on the off chance that I've misheard you, that perhaps there is a merciful God and my cold medication is just creating auditory hallucinations, let me repeat -- You're saying that Crackpots Day is only a cover for the clandestine supernatural and paranormal activities of the government?'
Review: Really the only reason to read this is because it's damn funny. Spit out coke on your monitor-style funny. I challenge anyone to read this and not laugh out loud at some point.
Slightly more seriously, this a cross-over that actually works. Yes, the characterisations are parodied a little, but they fit with the tone of this fic and just make it funny. And it's surprising how little parody needs to be done with some of them. The dialogue is superb and Yahtzee has an eye for the ridiculous in all these fandoms (and let's face it, there are some ridiculous elements to some of these fandoms). If you need a giggle and have any familiarity with two or more of these shows, then read this.

Plot: Most of the people in the rebellion had a bitter reason for it: a father killed, a sister taken away, or a home demolished or liberty denied. Jenna had no such trauma. Her family was respectable, her status impeccable, her freedoms generous by Federation standards.
Review: I wouldn't have said Jenna was my favourite Blakes 7 character, but this story made me find her interesting. The trouble with the series was that she never had that much to do, so this gives her a lot more backstory and you can understand from it why she's the way she is.
It's written in an interesting way, with tales from her life before the series starts intercut with her opinions on the Liberator crew. It gives us a new view of them and of her too.

Review: By it's very nature, there are times when it's a bit confusing as to who is who. not least when Blake, Avon and Vila are very good at being each other. With a bit of concentration, though, Marian doesn't make it too difficult. Although it's a funny story there are also interesting looks into their characters as they get to perceive how others see them.
There's not much I can say about this because there's not much plot (there doesn't need to be) and the characters, are technically speaking, out of character. Except that they're in character. The last line is a killer though.

Review: This is essentially what the crew did during the five days Avon was tortured in Rumours of Death. Each day is written from a different point of view as they all get to grips with what Avon is doing, what they think of it, and what they would do in his position. Although the characters do things in it that surprise each other they're still definitely in character. Review: This is a little sad, a little bittersweet and quite moving. It's short so on one level there isn't a huge amount to say without explaining the entire plot.
In some ways it's a mood piece rather than a dramatic piece. It's about connection and need. It's also slightly sweet and shows a remarkable understanding of Anya's character as well as Willow. The setting is sometime in season-seven, pre-Kennedy, with all the baggage that brings, and the writer does a great job of conveying the emotions that both characters are going through.

Review: I should really say that I'm also reccing the (NC-17) sequel to this - 'Making Plans'. It really works best if you read both of them.
CN Winters is a talented Xena writer, so I was pretty excited when I saw that she had some Buffy fic and even happier when I saw that it was my favourite pairing - Buffy/Willow. This fic is set in future and has a more mature feeling than many Buffy fics. Making Sense is written from Willow's POV and Making Plans from Buffy's. CN has managed to get into both their heads very well - the tone and phrasing fits the characters perfectly and you really can feel that you've changed POV from the first sentence. I could hear both characters as I read. The fics also dealt well with both characters' insecurities and problems, which is why they work best as a pair. I could hear, see and feel everything as I read and my first thought at the end was 'I must rec this and tell everyone about it'. My second was 'I must re-read this fic'. And then I decided to check out some of CN's recommendations :-)

Plot: After the events of Bad Beer, someone has to look after Cave-Buffy. Guess who...
Review: You remember Bad Beer? Tried to block it out of your memory? Succeeded? Anyway, this is one of the many B/G Shipper responses to that episode. Most of them were much better than the actual episode (although that isn't hard) and this is one of the best of the bunch. The Cave-Slayer concept is used wonderfully, Giles is flustered (always fun) and I almost killed myself laughing in places. The antics of prehistoric Buffy, and her attempts to thoroughly confuse her Watcher, are great fun and it's even more fun watching him try to resist her. Considering the episode it sprang from, this is a real treat (if you're of age) and the ending is sweet without being sickly. Just go read it. Now. Selenay want feedback...oops, regressed *giggle*

Review: JGB's stories are always warm and loving, and this one is no exception. She has a wonderful grasp of all the characters, particularly a certain Slayer and her Watcher, so you can almost see and hear them saying her lines. This is another Christmas-themed fic, but it's also a chance for those of us who wished Buffy and Giles had danced at the Prom to live vicariously. Plot: In a new twist on 'A Christmas Carol', Ripper is visited by some ghosts while in the present Buffy begins a research project to find out about her Watcher...
Review: Over the years, there have been a lot of stories written to fill out Giles' past and this is one of my favourites. It flashes between Ripper and Buffy and for the first time we get a good reason for Giles returning to the fold. The story is well written, atmospheric and you can almost see the places Karen is describing. At the same time it's great fun for anyone who's read 'A Christmas Carol' as well as for those who haven't. If you're a Ripper fan, or a Giles fan, or a Buffy fan, then this is a story you'll love. Of course, if you can't stand any of those characters you'll probably hate it, but it gives some rare insights into all of them and is definitely a good one to read.

Review: I haven't seen 'The Replacement' (I've only read the transcripts and have to wait until the TV stations in England show it) but this is a great take on a great episode. The two halves of Buffy, Slayer and Buffy, are used well here and it's a shame the show has never investigated this side of her. So it's not surprising that re-writing the episode has worked so well, and the Buffy/Willow overtones that were worked in don't jar at all. Review: This is, so far, Saber's only foray into the B/G world and but it's worth it. Saber is one of the rare authors who can make me actually laugh out loud several times in a fic. Buffy and Giles are captured well, with some wondefully tender moments as well as the outright comedy moments. Review: The summary is remarkably accurate. There are spoilers for the Buffy S7 finale and the Farscape S4 finale, so you can see where and how this might work (especially if you know Farscape better than I do *g*).
Why did I like this?
I didn't have to strain the bounds of the shows too far to convince myself it was plausible. That's always one of the weaknesses of a cross-over. It's basically a conversation between Buffy and John Crichton and it sounded like those characters. There was no awkward attempt to pair the two of them up and I ended it feeling vaguely hopeful for both of them. Basically, it's an example of how a cross-over can work well without mucking with characterisation and plausibility. It does the cross-over well and I felt like I'd learnt something new about both characters. Isn't that one of the reasons we read fanfic?

It's quite obvious that she's still getting herself into trouble regularly and her long family is still setting the world on its head. EBD was never very good at keeping track of details but this writer is and she manages to imagine things very much in keeping with what we know of the characters while adding a few EBD-ish surprises. There's also a whole load of things that make you think what would have happened to Sarah's house while she was away. There is some dodgy puncuation going on there but given that I'd read it a few times before I noticed, it's good enough to overlook.

Plot: Still...there was something to be said about the familiarity of a place at the holidays. And so it was that the Doctor found himself materializing in that old familiar alley at the Powell Estates, on the evening of Christmas Day, very nearly two years after he lost Rose Tyler into a parallel universe.
Review: This is a beautiful, slightly wistful 'what if' fic. Written before Voyage of the Damned aired but set afterwards, it's a Christmas fic about hope for tomorrow. I loved the Doctor in this one, less manic than normal but fitting for the type of fic, and the attention to the details of the Who-verse. It's one of those fics that leaves you with a warm, happy, fuzzy feeling so it's perfect for the season but at the same time it leaves you wondering what happened next. Curl up with some chocolate and enjoy this one.

Review: I'm always a sucker for a good Five Things fic, so this was a good read. It's primarily the 9th and 10th Doctors, but KickAir incorporates elements from original and new series without difficulty. You don't strictly need to have watched the original series, but a couple of the Things will have more resonance if you're familiar with it. KickAir comes up with some interesting potential AUs, the first one probably being my least favourite and I thoroughly enjoyed the rest. The second has echoes of an 'Age of Steel' question that I've been discussing with friends lately and it's always good to see Sarah-Jane return.
If you're looking for decent Doctor Who fic and enjoy Five Things fics, you'll probably find at least a couple of Things that you really enjoy here.

What stood out in this fic was the understanding of the relationship between Rose and the Doctor - how different and similar they are at the same time. Review: This is a fic that I read because it sounded interesting but I didn't think that I would actually review it. A Doctor/River fic published within a few days of the episode? Why would I want to do that?
The thing is that this is a great fic. It plays around with the idea of a non-linear life to explain so much about the Doctor and River. It keeps both of them in character and extrapolates what they might be like at various stages of their life in a way that's completely believable. Time travel stories are inevitably difficult to construct because the core story-line has to be kept in mind while taking snapshots from it and mixing them up. So to have a story written this well that makes sense and leaves you genuinely caring for everyone is a treat.

The reason for the rec is the writing. Sangga has a very sparse style without frills. She writes what needs to be said and leaves the rest to your imagination. Review: The reason I initially clicked into this was because Raven used that first line as her summary and it intrigued me so much. The idea of a Doctor Who/Harry Potter cross-over seemed odd, the pairing didn't really catch me, but that first sentence did.
I'm pleased to report that the rest of the fic lives up to that first sentence. The beauty of time travel is that things aren't necessarily linear and that's something Raven plays with well. The writing is what really makes this fic work because it does appear on the surface to be an odd combination of fandoms and pairings. Raven writes it so well though, with a deft touch for the deeper ideas that she only hints at, that you can be persuaded that this really does work. She also has a great feel for the characters and what they're doing, which makes this a great combination.

Review: A Highlander/Doctor Who/Torchwood cross-over shouldn't work when just listed that way, but this one really does. I love the ideas in it and Kesomon has a style that blends the humour of the situation perfectly with the action. This isn't laugh out loud funny because the humour comes out of the relationships and, most of all, Methos' outlook on everything. She caught the character voices very well and I could hear the Doctor talking as I read. The interaction between Jack and the other Torchwood members felt right, in keeping with what we've seen. Although this is definitely a Jack/Ianto fic from Ianto's, it isn't rewriting the episode to give that relationship a bigger role, instead finding the reasons and hints behind it. As an alternative to the canon it raises some interesting ideas and gives us a new outlook on a few things.

Plot: Discovering just who Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are brings up even more questions for Fred -- and when fate takes another of them away, it's time to go back to the source for some answers.
Review: There are many reasons why I liked this fic. First it's Remus/Sirius from another perspective: Fred's. There are so many stories out there that a different viewpoint tends to make it feel fresh. It helps that the characterisation of Fred is well done, and gives him a character seperate to that of George, which rarely happens in the books.
The second reason is the story of how the Marauders Map was made, which is interesting in itself, but Casira has interspersed it with the rest of the story, rather than a long boring section at the end, where it actually happens.
It's also beautifully romantic and angsty at the same time. Part of the story takes place after Order of the Phoenix, and Casira shows us how Remus, and Sirius, feel about it, without ever dropping out of Fred's POV.
And if you're curious, the original is good as well, this one is just better because it takes the whole thing a bit further, and adds in the map making part.

Review: As a Highlander fan and a Holby City fan, this fic immediately caught my attention and I'm very glad that it did. The idea of Methos as Dan Clifford works so well and, in some ways, is a logical step given the canon. Heh.
Faye as a Watcher also works and I loved her observations about the hospital and Immortal society. Hopefully it works for fans of either series, but it works best if you have some familiarity with both if only to get all the little asides and in-jokes scattered through the fic. In some ways you have to know Holby City just to know why an Immortal wouldn't seem completely out of place in the shiny, cracky show.

Review: I never expected to read a Keeping Up Appearances fanfic in my life, let alone enjoy one as much as I did this one. It's just like an episode and the idea of Hyacinth dealing with the recession is a funny one to begin with. And it's really funny to see her coping with the idea of spending less money - and then actually spending less money. Elrond's reaction, in this fic, seems so right, as is Arwen's. It's beautifully written - it's easy to see Elrond's love for his daughter, and his fear at losing her.

This is silly, sweet and incredibly funny. It gently mocks some of the LotR cliches while being very tender. Merry and Pippin are well-drawn with dialogue that I could hear as I read. The writer also has an eye for descriptions, managing to paint the scenes vividly without distracting from the main thrust of the story. Trying to say much about the plot would give away too many spoilers, except to say that this is set in Lothlorien and therefore is during the quest, but do I need to say much more than 'please go and read it?' Mary-Lou and Mavis both feel fleshed out and real in what she writes without falling into the trap of over emphasising their character quirks. These are very definitely the reboot characters and while the established relationship from the first movie is definitely there, it's not the focus of this fic. The focus is Kirk's attempts to work out how to be an authority figure on his own starship after Chekov punches a senior officer. The Kirk we see at the end of the movie has somehow been promoted straight from cadet to captain and he's not had the years to build up experience with this sort of thing. It's really very funny and the voices are just perfect. The good thing is that Q allows Kirk to learn and grow from the experience as well. Review: These are really two stories, but they read more like they were two parts of the same one. I'd just say the same thing about both of them, so I might just as well review them at the same time.
They are a prequel to Sharon Nuttycombe's Cast my Soul to the Sea, with One Day taking place in the day leading up to the events in that story, and Permanent Twilight two years before. They both give more of a picture of Obi-Wan's life.
I can't say much more about the plot without spoiling anything. Apart from Obi-Wan, everyone else in it are OCs, and them, and their relationships with Obi-Wan, are completely believable. The ones who do good things, do them for a reason, and the ones who do bad things also do them for a reason. It's easy to understand everyone's motivations and sympathise with Obi-Wan's plight.
What makes it angsty is that there's always a bit of hope - it's just a question of whether Obi-Wan can find a way to exploit it.

Plot: What if Qui-Gon had not accepted Obi-Wan as his Padawan, all those years ago? And what if things had gone horribly wrong because if it?
Review: This story is essentially an AU to the first two Jedi Apprentice books. In those, Qui-Gon resists choosing Obi-Wan as his apprentice and Obi-Wan is sent to be a farmer on Bandomeer. But Yoda manipulates the situation to force the two of them together.
Cast my Soul to the Sea is written from Qui-Gon's POV, so we find out what exactly happened to Obi-Wan as he does. And whenever we do find anything out it's only a tiny little bit at a time, so you never quite build up the whole picture. Which is great because that, along with what's going on at the same time, keeps you reading because you really want to know how it's going to end.
The characterisations of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are particularly good as well. They're just like you would expect them to be, just a bit younger, and a bit different. Qui-Gon hasn't really had that much of a different life in this Au, so he's pretty much the same. But in Obi-Wan, you can see he is in there, but because his life has changed so much, so has he. And the clues Sharon gives out explain why he has changed, and explain it all well.

The Stargate should be a cool, 'would you lookit that?' thing but it's so easy for the extraordinary to become commonplace. Looking at this idea through their eyes was just wonderful.

Review: I was watching WoO a couple of nights ago and remembered reading a lovely Jack/Daniel tag a couple of years ago, before I started reccing SG. WoO is an ep that causes problems for some Jack/Daniel fans, but it's also a fun episode and I remembered that this fic took away some of the sting from one or two scenes. So, of course, I had to hunt it down and rec it :-)
No Consequences is a short, fun fic with a little dose of angst to spice things up. It neatly explains the more problematic parts of WoO without removing anything and adds some lovely touches. NC-17 is probably too high a rating because it's more about the emotions than anything graphic, but that's more than fine with me.

Review: The summary in some ways says it all. This fic is largely a stream of consciousness from Daniel as he makes some important discoveries. Carron has managed to get Daniel's internal voice very well so that it sounds just like him. She also has some interesting insights into Jack's character and the way he is viewed by other people. These combine to make Daniel's revelations about his feelings more of a 'why did I see it before?' thing instead of an unhappy realisation. The tone throughout is gentle, as befits the subject, and there are some lovely descriptive lines. What more could you want?

Many don't convince because they either have the wrong 'voices' or simply haven't captured anything of Jack and Daniel's friendship before. This one doesn't fall into either trap. Jack and Daniel are recognisable and have great dialogue and it's perfectly possible to see why it's a natural progression in their relationship. This fic is short but I wouldn't describe it as a PWP (whatever Catspaw might say to the contrary) and I've already read it three times :-)

This is the other fic to come out of Joy and DM's private Valentine challenge. It's a completely different tone from Joy's, as befits an established relationship fic instead of a first time, and just as good. Daniel's motivations are completely in character and DM, as usual, has both his and Jack's voices just right. More importantly there is a humorous tone to this fic that never gets out of hand and left me grinning at the end and it's a great antidote to all the diabetic-coma-inducing sappiness around me.

Review: Another response to Ximeria's Sex on Base challenge, so you can pretty much guess the content :-)
There are a couple of reasons why I'm reccing this. First is that sex on base is very difficult to do convincingly - the logic and risks just keep slapping me in the face. But kylie (and Kiva and The Grrrl) both set up situations that work and overcome all the logic problems I usually have.
Secondly, Daniel does dirty talk. Now, usually I'm not a fan of fics with lots of dirty talk because it doesn't fit with the character and it's, frankly, not very well done. This is brilliant, 'reads' like Daniel and it's hot. One of the few times that I've ever seen it done well for either character and I loved it.
In short, this is a fun, sexy PWP and one of the rare ones that I've felt needed reccing.

Plot: Rodney has some things to work out and some memories to recover.
Review: This is a sequel to 'Hello Timebomb', a pre-slashy Sheppard/McKay fic wherein Rodney behaves rather unlike himself. 'Scar Tissue' is the superior fic, but you may want to read the first so that you know what's going on. I read them in the wrong order, but 'Scar Tissue' still made perfect sense to me - YMMV :-)
I think that I like this fic because it has a lot of internal-Rodney agnst, but the writer never makes him whiny, depressed or out of character. At no stage does Rodney burst into tears or turn into a girl, but his distress at the half-formed memories and unexpected feelings flavours all his thoughts. Her voices are spot-on for all the characters - the dialogue is one of the great aspects of this fic. The eventual resolution feels 'right' and...well...that part I won't spoil for you :-)

Review: I love the idea, in this story that half of Atlantis is desperate to read the latest Harry Potter, so McKay comes up with some inventive ways of extracting payment in return for lending it out. I can't say much about it otherwise I'll spoil the plot. But the way Fabula Rasa gets those two together is great. The aftermath is even better, specially with all the book metaphors going on.

Nothing is stated obviously about any of the pairings, but the implications are there for anyone who wants to read them that way. I liked the fact that Kageygirl had the voices so right and saw some interesting potential in these characters, but doesn't beat you over the head with what she's thinking. Review: This is the second fic in a sequence begun with 'Courtship Rituals' (also on Kylie's site) so you'll need to read that one first, but 'Pulling Back' is the one that really got me to rec the sequence. Kylie is great at producing interesting, believable fics about characters and pairings that wouldn't have occurred to me. In this one, she fleshes out Halling's character a little, even though the story is really about Beckett. It feels 'real' as you read it - Beckett's thoughts and reactions work in the context of the fic and the character in general. I can't say too much without giving too many spoilers, but I will say that I loved the atmosphere and style of this fic and I hope it's not the last time that Kylie visits this set-up.

But it's actually very well written and doesn't shy away from considering the implications of what John is doing, which makes it so much more. trinityofone isn't flowery with her language, but she conjures mental images so that you're seeing the fic in your mind as much as reading.
