Plot: Patrick explores his many phobias.
Review: This is perfect Patrick. This story carries on from the film, relating back to those events and how they've affected those they happened to. All the supporting characters are great and in character. The original characters all have names that are a mixture of the actor and character name from Stargate Atlantis (eg John Flannigan). Which is amusing and also helps to picture what they're like. The story deals with the relationship between Patrick and John and it's funny and realistic, given what Patrick's like, to see how they goes as the story goes on.

Review: Yes it really is an Alias/Bridget Jones crossover, as narrated by Bridget herself in her diary. When she ends up with a Rambaldi manuscript she meets up with Jack, and later Sydney, Bristow. And being Bridget, obssesses over Jack and is jealous of Sydney. It's funny, it doesn't seem unlikely to happen in either universe and all the characters are in all character.

Review: This was written for the femslash08 ficathon and is one of the many gems to come out of it. Really good Susan/Talia fic is hard to find and post-series fic is even harder. Calle captures the voices just perfectly and creates a story that is both true to them and thoroughly new. I loved the hope in the story and the blunt, to the point Susan that we have come to love. At a decent length, it's the kind of fic that you can get your teeth into and enjoy.

Plot: The crew are in an unusual situation in another galaxy.
Review: I'm in great danger of recommending everything Nicola Mody has ever written at this point, but then that's because it's so good. In this one, the crew end up as pets. The most interesting parts are the descriptions of the crew by the aliens. You can tell easily which is which from their clothing and attitudes, but you can also see why the aliens would think these people are pets, as they do behave like animals in some respects.
The other most interesting part is the crew's reactions to being split up and living with their owners. All the owners treat their 'pets' differently, but even so the reactions by the characters are totally within character. As are their plans to get themselves out of there.

Review: The plot is like Death-Watch, but ridiculous. And involves cooking. Often a funny story requires taking the characters out of character, but that isn't really the case here. A few of their characteristics have been stretched but not by much. Quite what this says about the Liberator crew, I don't know.

Plot: With the Magic Box destroyed, Anya needs a way to make money. How about a webcam? And what if Willow stumbled across the webcam?
Review: This is fairly high on the list of improbable plots, but that's part of what makes this story works. Calle takes the idea, runs with it and manages to produce a great fic that is surprisingly in character. It is set post-season six, so expect spoilers up to there, and her grasp of both Willow and Anya is great. She has their voices and the story moves along in an oddly believable way. I say 'oddly' because logic seems to dictate that this won't work and yet it does. Willow/Anya isn't a pairing that I thought would work, the plot isn't an idea that I thought could be done and then I read it and changed my mind. I'm even being converted into seeing the Willow/Anya.

Plot: The appearance of a mysterious book changes Buffy and Giles' relationship, but why? And can the change be permanent?...
Review: Gabi has written many fics, and she has turned into one of my favourite writers, so it's not surprising that this ranks as one of my favourite B/G fics. It's well written, despite English being her second language, and has an unusual approach to the relationship. It was written during the summer after Graduation so some events are different to the series canon (obviously). Giles owns a bookshop, the Library, and Buffy works as his assistant. During this time they become closer and when a strange order of books arrives it's only natural that they break the monotony of owning a quiet bookshop by reading them.
What the books cause forces both characters, and also the readers, to examine their relationship and results in a surprisingly honest relatioship fic. Mixed in with some deep thoughts are some appropriately funny scenes (as well as the odd steamy one) and it all combines into a beautiful fic. If you haven't read B/G before (and you're of age) go read this one. It's worth it.

Plot: Five roads not taken. A character portrait through five alternatives.
Review: Another 'Five Things' fic and another interesting look at a Buffy character who doesn't often get much consideration beyond the surface. I've often thought that the Trio of S6 were one of the weaker Buffy villains, but then I look at the individuals (especially Andrew in S7) and what their actions triggered and have a lot of respect for Joss. Warren is one of those characters who doesn't get much development beyond the surface sociopath stuff so it's fascinating to read something that really delves into his character. Each potential path is interesting, sparks the usual 'hmm' thoughts that a 'Five Things' fic sparks and makes you think more deeply about Warren. Some of them are sympathetic, some aren't. The writing is good enough to convince you that they are all possible. I won't tell you which possibility I like best (possibly some may guess, though) - just read this and make up your own mind.

Plot: Four different looks at how things could have gone after the explosion, followed by what actually happened. Really.
Review: As you can see by the plot, this is essentially four (or five) potential paths that Greg's life could have taken. That makes it almost impossible to classify because there is het and slash contect (something I really didin't anticipate when I was setting the site up) and also makes it a different and interesting fic.
I'm not sure whether I can explain why I liked this. Possibly just because it was such an interesting idea and well-executed. Each path could easily be the jump-off point for a fic, but they all work well as the snippets presented here. Maybe I'm just enjoying good writing and an interesting premise.

Plot: The snake, eating its own tail; the wayside boundary stone: by what measureless markers should Life be understood?
Review: One of the major things that I liked about this fic was the way that the relationships parallel each other without being re-enactments. It's a great look at Nita's relationship with Kit, which doesn't follow the usual paths of a male/female relationship in books and the writer doesn't try to make it into something else in her fic.
Tom and Carl are great characters and they are just right in this fic. You can read their relationship as either romantic or platonic from the books and I've often wondered whether that is deliberate. This fic gives some lovely insight into how they might have met and reads between the lines without changing either character.
This is also a plotty fic and it feels like it could be an extra few chapters in one of the book. It's a fic that just works.

Review: Dodo is intent on making Steven realise his feelings for her match hers for him. You can see how they get closer in the segments of the story connected directly with the episodes. The last scene is quite sad and hopeful. It's an interesting fic because it captures the newly regenerated Ten perfectly. Cryptile has thought about the character and his transition and put it into words that fit. There are some great images in here, particularly the graffiti (needs to be read to understand), and some interesting insights into the other characters. You follow RayK's POV throughout the fic and there's an air of both frustration and realisation of how ridiculous it all is. Due South is a fandom where drama needs to be tinged with humour to keep the tone of the show and fics with a sense of the ridiculous always help. Although this fic has some great obverservations about the characters, it's not intended as a serious deep and meaningful fic - but it is a good, fun, well-written fic that will be added to my list of fics to return to whenever I need cheering up. Review: I usually prefer my Remus/Sirius fic to be set after Hogwarts, but this one is set during their seventh year and couldn't work any other way. The humour comes from James Potter's attempts to attract Lily, a plot that's rather more like combat than seduction and plays well with the obnoxious James we see in OotP.
Remus and Sirius are slightly more understated and it's more about admitting to feelings that they both know about than a seduction. Sirius is a little less oblivious than he's often portrayed and Remus a little less tortured, but it works perfectly.

The dinosaur thing did cause me some problems when I then watched the movie. Loved the movie, but I'm probably the only person over the age of seven who squeaked loudly each time a dinosaur appeared. Even the herbivores. We are not discussing my age.
The problem was that I loved this from the first sentence so of course I had to watch the movie. This fic has Biblio's trademark humour, a little bit of angst and a wonderful relationship between Alan and Billy. Biblio has a real talent for dialogue that comes out wonderfully here. I wasn't sure whether I'd be convinced about reading a new pairing after reading so much of her Stargate fic, but Alan and Billy made the story their own immediately. It was interesting to see two characters who only had a two hour movie to establish their relationship and find that there was so much to work with in this fic.
Most importantly in this rec, this is a fic that got me to watch a movie I swore up and down that I'd never watch after the abject misery of my terror in the first Jurassic Park. I'm apparently not allowed to live down all the sqeaking (it wasn't screaming) during the movie :-)

Review: This is, so far, Legolas/Aragorn to actually convince me. Possibly that's because it's movie canon rather than book canon or maybe it's because it was written by ELG. Whatever.
This is an enjoyable piece that puts a slightly different spin on a few incidents in The Two Towers and actually has a suprisingly convincing relationship between Legolas and Aragorn. The 'voice' of the fic is different from ELG's Stargate work and fits much better with the general tone of LoTR. This is a very visual fic - ELG paints the scenes with her words. I've read it several times (yup, I really enjoyed it) and I still love it.

Whatever shall he do? (No het content, but could be considered to have a Mary Sue. But at least she's a dead Mary Sue...)
Review: This is possibly one of the few cases where a Mary Sue (more of a Yenta Sue, really) is genuinely entertaining :-)
This is a funny, slightly silly fic that had me grinning and giggled the whole way through. Somehow, it also had quite a touching relationship between Frodo and Sam as well. Sam, Frodo and even the Mary Sue jump off the page and refuse to let you go until you've finished it. It's one of those fics that you know is fluffy and light, with absolutely no dark angst or derring-do to redeem it, but it's going to be pulled out whenever you need a pick-me-up from a bad day or a depressingly dark (yet morally 'worthy') fic. There is also great characterisation, beautiful description and a gentle humour to it that keeps you grinning but doesn't overshadow the the plot. They're trying to work out how their relationship fits in with the idea that grown-up hobbits don't do that sort of thing, and should actually be getting married and having babies. It's also partly about Pippin adjusting to a quiet life back in the Shire, albeit one without Frodo and Gandalf.
I almost can't categorise this story because it's happy and sad at the same time. And a lovely portrayal of hobbit life that seems so real.

It's also focused completely on Lorian, which gives it a unique 'voice'. Using the POV of a character outside the slash pairing often doesn't work well - this fic does. It gives the thoughts and motivations of someone who is, in some ways, just seeing the outside of the relationship. At the same time, Lorian has a connection to Archer and Tucker that leaves him with issues that I haven't seen explored in fanfic often. Everything that happens makes sense and we get more of an idea of what is actully going on in Engineering.
The characterisation is also good. Ludjin has nailed T'Pol and made her perfectly underwritten - when she shows an emotion only Trip can see it. There's great UST in here too.

Review: There's some lovely Obi-Wan & Anakin relationship stuff in here (of the non-slash variety). Jaxmari paints a great picture of their ordinary lives: their opinions on heat and Obi-Wan's punishments are examples that stick in my mind.
After that set-up the story goes onto a lesson that Yoda gives and Obi-Wan participates in. There's lots of foreshadowing, given we know what's going to happen. Both Anakin and Obi-Wan have so much faith in Anakin's future as a Jedi.
What really got me about this was the way the characters fitted into the ones we know from the films and the books. Even though there's not been much with Anakin at this age, I can imagine that this is exactly how what happened.

It's a denial-fic, so Qui-Gon is still alive, Obi-Wan is preparing for his knight's trials and Anakin is also Qui-Gon's padawan. Which is where some of the angst comes from on the part of Obi-Wan. To say where any of the rest comes from would be to give the plot away.

This is set after 'The Curse' in season 4, which is not an easy time to write for Jack and Daniel. Nor has she forgotten the other members of the team because their voices are heard just as well.
A lot of what I love about this story is the plot I can't tell you about :-) but it's also the relationship built during the story. Plot: Ten years on, it becomes apparent that the Aschen weren't quite the blessing that humanity had thought them to be. SG-1 put the world to rights. As usual.
Review: I should probably mention that 2010 is the only episode that makes me grit my teeth - it's a physics, grandfather paradox problem that unfortunately spoils my enjoyment of an otherwise interesting episode. But I did manage to get past that to read this story and I'm glad that I did.
It's essentially a 'fill in the gaps' fic for 2010. It follows the storyline in the episode by filling in the bits we didn't see and trying to make sense of what we did see and it works. There's a slightly dark, unhappy tone to the sections set in 2010, appropriately, but this isn't a fic that will leave you in a state of deep depression. It will stay with you, though, and make you think about some of the ideas it raised long after you've finished. Terry has the 'voices' just right and even makes sense of the episode's slightly problematic Jack characterisation.

Review: Usually I just point folks in the direction of a sequel to something that I've rec'ed and tell them that it's also good. However, I felt that this one deserved it's own rec. It's a sequel to the fic 'Hope' and picks up where that one left off.
The tone in this one is slightly different, a bit more angst and a bit hotter. It's a beautiful portrait of Daniel's frustration with his amnesia and the Jack's divergent instincts to keep their relationship simple until Daniel recovers and progress their relationship now that they've agreed they have feelings for each other. I loved how well this was conveyed and how well the author kept the characterisations true even though Daniel has amnesia. It was a beautiful story that kept me captivated until the last word.

Review: This is a wonderful Jack fic. The Grrrl has captured Jack's voice and internal confusion well. His fears about how their personal relationship is affecting their working relationship is something that's often touched on in fanfic, but rarely in a convincing way. This fic looks at that and does convince, as well as working through some of the wider problems. It's also a hopeful fic and the angst is done well without becoming oppressive or repetative. As always, I really enjoyed this fic and The Grrrl has become one of the writers I look for in each A52 update.

Review: I haven't really seen many post-ascension fics - but then, I have around 3MB of backlogged fic to read, so that probably explains it. This one, though, is a beautiful one and, after reading the first paragraph, I just couldn't save it for later. Ximeria creates an incredible atmosphere in this fic, a mixture of tranquility and uncertainty that works perfectly for Daniel. This is written in third-person from Daniel's POV and Ximeria does a lovely job of working through his thought processes and internal dillemas. The descriptions and dialogue all work together to make you 'see' what you're reading. Her Jack is just right and there is just enough gentle humour to liven it up without allowing it to overwhelm the important parts of the story. Even the sex is well-written (not easy to do), being fun and steamy while keeping the atmosphere of the rest of the fic.
This is a beautiful, well-written story that captured me until I'd read the final word.

It's also sexy and sweet, and I adore her Jack and Daniel. Sam and Teal'c get a fair amount to do as well, something that is often missing in slash stories, and throughout there's a wonderful team vibe. I can't praise this enough :-)

The relationship between Sheppard and McKay is built slowly and the atmosphere throuhgout is intense without going overboard with tension. I could hear the voices as I read, always important with characters this distinctive, and the character motivations make sense. If you're going to write a fic based around one of the great fanfic cliches, it needs to be done well and needs to have an edge to set it apart from the five hundred other cliche fics. Resonant has filled both requirements in spades.
The fic works because the characters stay in character and there'e enough humour in the situation and reactions to keep it buzzing along nicely. There is so much potential in the concept of John as Rodney's slave and Resonant plays with it all. I loved her treatment of John here - managing to be both slave-like and irritatingly bossy all at once. I adored her portrayal of Rodney, because it really worked for his character. Surprisingly, it works very well.
It's not a cross-over in the strictest, characters from the two fandoms meeting sense of the word. The fic is more of an Atlantis AU set within the logic of the His Dark Materials universe. So each of our Atlantis character has a daemon and elements of the HDM-universe are mentioned, but they're in the Pegasus galaxy fighting the Wraith.
The major reason to read this is just how well trinityofone has managed to integrate the two worlds and make it all work. It's a fascinating fic with some great characterisation, good world-building and plot ideas that will keep you glued to the final word.

Review: I couldn't put it down I was utterly hooked. Avon has all the characters spot-on, even though this fic is set in the future. It's set at Toby's funeral, and weaved in through it are scenes of Toby's last days, so we can understand what Sam's going through, trying to understand what Toby wanted of him.

Plot: 'Love changes you—for the better, if you're lucky—and I don't know if I can handle how you changed me. But you did change me, Jack, and then you were gone.'
Review: Now that the fandom is in the post-season 1 break, writers are starting to speculate about season 2. This fic doesn't deal with what happens between - it starts from the assumption that Jack is back at Torchwood. But it's an interesting study of how Ianto reacts to that and how their relationship could evolve. The fic is well written and Lucy Jane has thought a bit about the repurcussions from , which makes this fic stand out from so many others.

Plot: The importance of not running into oneself had been drummed into him from the first day in the academy.
Review: This fic needs to be read because it's well-written, absorbing and has great Jack characterisation. It also uses the idea of time paradoxes in an interesting way that I haven't seen much in Doctor Who or Torchwood fic. The author has actually thought through the ideas she's used and the tying together of the various story threads works very well.
Possibly the greatest reason for reading this fic comes in the last line, but I refuse to spoil that for you. If you're looking for a good, plotty, Jack-centric story then this is definitely for you.

Plot: Alys worries about Cordelia; Aral and Cordelia confront at last the issue of children, as Miles, Ivan, and Elena have an adventure that Ivan never forgets.
Review: I love the way this story fits into the series, telling the story of how Aral and Cordelia decided they shouldn't have any more children. Miles as a child is just so perfectly Miles, both when he's playing and when he's not. It's just so well written in all the details and everything that it's hard to imagine it's not in any of the books. Of all the Yuletide 2007 stories I read, this one is the best of all of them.

Review: My favourite characters in the whole Vorkosigan series are Aral and Cordelia and I wish there had been more of them in the books. This story gives me just what I'd have liked to have read of their relationship and how it changes with time, their relationship with Miles and Mark, and their reaction to various events. And Miles managed to have quite a few events. Each section starts with various Barrayan rules that relate to the section, if not quite in the way the rules put them and showing how Cordelia doesn't follow them at all.
