Plot: Alice's teatime conversation with the Mad Hatter is not as she expects.
Review: This could be straight out of the book. It has exactly the right sort of craziness that you get during the tea party. The nonsense talk is just how the Mad Hatter and March Hare spoke and Alice's confusion is just how it is in the books. It's just how Lewis Carroll would have written it and if I tell you that Alice in Wonderland is my favourite book, you'll be able to tell just what high praise that is.

Review: I thought this fic was hysterical - it had me in stitches with it's shooting script-style and the descriptions of the actions. The best thing is that it works so well if you listen to the song while reading it! The author is a crazy genius! Her characterisation was just hilarious, picking up certain elements of the main characters with some laugh-out-loud funny lines. I haven't read anything this funny in forever! Tee-hee (still laughin').

Plot: Vila ends up having to pretend to be Blake, leaving Avon to pretend to be Vila and Blake pretending to be Avon.
Review: By it's very nature, there are times when it's a bit confusing as to who is who. not least when Blake, Avon and Vila are very good at being each other. With a bit of concentration, though, Marian doesn't make it too difficult. Although it's a funny story there are also interesting looks into their characters as they get to perceive how others see them.
There's not much I can say about this because there's not much plot (there doesn't need to be) and the characters, are technically speaking, out of character. Except that they're in character. The last line is a killer though.

Plot: The crew are in an unusual situation in another galaxy.
Review: I'm in great danger of recommending everything Nicola Mody has ever written at this point, but then that's because it's so good. In this one, the crew end up as pets. The most interesting parts are the descriptions of the crew by the aliens. You can tell easily which is which from their clothing and attitudes, but you can also see why the aliens would think these people are pets, as they do behave like animals in some respects.
The other most interesting part is the crew's reactions to being split up and living with their owners. All the owners treat their 'pets' differently, but even so the reactions by the characters are totally within character. As are their plans to get themselves out of there.

Plot: During a routine patrol, Fluffy is surprised when a vampire she stakes refuses to die. The next day, at Farmer's house, the gang research one unusual element of the vampire encounter, and discover some worrying facts.
Returning to the site of the previous night's action, Fluffy, Ash and Alex are confronted by an old enemy, one who really shouldn't be where they find him. The result of this meeting leads Fluffy and Alex into the depths of a lair of vampires and a fight for their lives - while Ash and Farmer struggle to use new technology to save them...
Review: I helped work on this film. The script is very well-written, the dialogue is very funny, and it's a real homage to Buffy.
The finished film will be available to download from the web site from late December 2001.
Selenay's note: Normally I don't accept reviews by the work's own creators, but this is such an unusual idea that I decided it warranted some special consideration. The website looks great and I'm looking forward to the finished product, which debutes on-line after the World Premier in London, 8th December.

Plot: Joey finally returns to Canada.
Review: It's a Chalet School future-fic, with Joey returning to Canada to visit the Robin and in the process giving us all the hanes on everyone post-Prefects in typical Joey fashion. It's quite obvious that she's still getting herself into trouble regularly and her long family is still setting the world on its head. EBD was never very good at keeping track of details but this writer is and she manages to imagine things very much in keeping with what we know of the characters while adding a few EBD-ish surprises. It all feels very much in keeping with the books and I love the Joey in this.

Review: Professor Richardson always seemed like a slightly odd character for the Chalet School (space flight in fifties school girl literature?) so this fic tries to give a bit more background. Review: Spoilers up to Wizards at War.
The fic takes place from Kit's POV but it's all about Carmela and the author has a great voice for her. With Carmela as a central character there is a fair bit of humour, but there's also some reflection on the events of the previous books and I enjoyed the quiet friendship between Kit and Ronan. It's nice to get a bit of speculation on how Carmela fits into everything and this is a fun, smart fic that adds nicely to what we know of her.

Plot: The Chalet School has three new pupils. Sarah Jane is ambivalent; Ace has been coerced by the Doctor, and Jo is just thrilled to be at boarding school at last. Meanwhile, Barbara Wright joins the school as a mistress. Mysterious weather and strange doings make this a term to remember.
Review: For some reason, the TARDIS Big Bang challenge managed to produce two Chalet School cross-overs and they are both excellent. This one is quite different to Paranoidangel's fic and equally good.
It reads just like a Chalet School book (complete with potted histories so that a non-CS fan should easily pick it up) but the Doctor Who elements are there from the beginning as well. Although it is an AU, there is nothing in it that couldn't be canon in either series with a tiny bit of nudging. I would need to check on characters' ages, but I suspect that even the time-lines mesh. Hhertzof manages to get several incarnations of the Doctor and several past companions into the story without jarring and adds in a good plot with both DW and CS elements combined. The characterisation is great and it's a completely absorbing novel-length fic. Reserve a couple of afternoons and enjoy it.

This crossover is a bit like if you stuck Ford and Arthur in the Doctor Who world, this is what it (and they) would be like, and if you stuck the Doctor and Donna in the Hitchhiker's world, this is what it (and they) would be like. Of course, Harry Potter can't have an ordinary magical illness (and Marina's thoughts on how these are dealt with are interesting, and believable), Voldemort has to have a go at him as well.
Harry and Snape's encounter with the Death Eaters is great action when it comes, but the best parts of this fic have to be Harry and Snape in beds next to each other with nothing to do but read and talk.

Review: As a Highlander fan and a Holby City fan, this fic immediately caught my attention and I'm very glad that it did. The idea of Methos as Dan Clifford works so well and, in some ways, is a logical step given the canon. Heh.
Faye as a Watcher also works and I loved her observations about the hospital and Immortal society. Hopefully it works for fans of either series, but it works best if you have some familiarity with both if only to get all the little asides and in-jokes scattered through the fic. In some ways you have to know Holby City just to know why an Immortal wouldn't seem completely out of place in the shiny, cracky show.
The email format might have been irritating in any other fic, but this is well-written, fun and thoroughly enjoyable. It's one of those rare cross-overs that combines both shows brilliantly and I loved it.

Review: Yes, I'm reccing a gen story :-) And it's great. Baylor has a wonderful 'voice' for this whole series and it kept me enthralled. Classifying it was actually quite difficult, because it's a series of short tales set during Fellowship of the Ring that don't have big set pieces or major plots, but are instead careful reflections on hobbits and Boromir's relationship with them. This is definitely a book-canon series and Baylor has a Tolkien-esque voice - she has obviously studied Boromir's words and actions in the book and built on them very well. The thought processes here work very well both at conveying the hobbits' personalities and Boromir's growing understanding and affection for them. That relationship is sadly neglected in the books but Baylor does a wonderful job with it, giving an insight into Boromir that I haven't seen much of in fanfic before. If you like hobbits or Boromir then this definitely shouldn't be missed.

Review: Each chapter depicts a different event on the journey during The Fellowship of the Ring, all from Boromir's point of view. In each one he learns different things about their characters and their lives. And their family trees, which are horrendously complicated. It's all set in happy(ish) times, when they're not quite so concerned about imminent death and the ring. The humour comes from the way the characters react to situations and what the hobbits do - which, of course, seems strange to non-hobbits.

Plot: Master Yoda finds himself as the substitute teacher of a class full of energetic jedi students. Special guest appearance by Qui-Gon Jinn in a youthful breakthrough performance.
Review: The students are young and annoying, and Yoda is senile and incompetent. Which makes for a perfect pairing. It's all seen from Yoda's point of view, and an interesting one it is.
Basically, it's funny. It certainly made me laugh out loud, especially when I found out who Veggie was. The best part of this is Yoda's inability to remember any names - he practically never calls any of the kids the same name twice and always manages to come up with appropriate, yet funny ones.

Review: The story ties in Obi-Wan and Anakin's relationship with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon's: how they're different, how they're the same, and how Obi-Wan misses his Master. The characterisation of Anakin makes sense with reference to TPM. Obi-Wan in this is lovely and sweet and caring. It's a nice feel-good fic.

Plot: Sam's reflections on the events in 'Unnatural Selection' (season 6)
Review: Sam is a difficult character to write, particularly her internal thoughts. The author did this very well and created a piece that, although brief, gives a lot of insight into the character. I was particularly impressed because it built on events in a season 6 episode that needed some more explanation.

Review: This is a beautifully written short piece focusing on Cassie. To say anything about the plot would give it away but that's not really what's important. What is important is the lovely picture of the family of the SGC that Deb built. It's gentle but filled with emotions and I absolutely loved it from the moment I read it (I've been waiting for it to hit the archives to that I could rec it).

Review: It's never easy to review vignettes without giving away most of their content. This one is a Ronon fic and the main reason to read it is the beautiful writing and the hints of backstory that Brighid has developed. I loved the ideas she's created and Ronon's observations about his new team mates are just right.

Review: This is really three vignettes combined into one fic and I was wracking my mind about how to classify it. The fics are gentle, quiet and pitched just right. Nothing is stated obviously about any of the pairings, but the implications are there for anyone who wants to read them that way. I liked the fact that Kageygirl had the voices so right and saw some interesting potential in these characters, but doesn't beat you over the head with what she's thinking. Read this and get three beautifully written fics in one dose.

Plot: Vila Restal walks into a bar and meets... Acastus Kolya!
Review: It's quite funny how Vila and Kolya react to each other. It's in character, since they're not two people that you'd expect to get on with each other. The reason why they're both in a car together is a good one, and the plot behind it is a lot like a Blake's 7 episode.

Plot: Trev is really a time lord.
Review: There's a long-running joke in The Bill fandom that when a character vanishes suddenly from the programme never to be seen again they're in the stationery cupboard. TREV is an acronym for Totally Reliable Extra Veteran - or a fancy way of saying extra who is in quite a few episodes in the background.
Catbert takes this idea and makes it ridiculous, although plausible. The only trouble is it's so short I really can't say any more about it without spoiling it any more than I have already.

Review: I love the way this story fits into the series, telling the story of how Aral and Cordelia decided they shouldn't have any more children. Miles as a child is just so perfectly Miles, both when he's playing and when he's not. It's just so well written in all the details and everything that it's hard to imagine it's not in any of the books. Of all the Yuletide 2007 stories I read, this one is the best of all of them.

Review: Set a few years after Ethan of Athos, this is an interesting look at some of the consequences of the events in the book. It's well written with just enough information to jog my memory of the book without dumping a ton of exposition in the story. I particularly liked that it was not set in Ethan's POV and tackled some of the more interesting aspects of the Athos culture.
