Plot: In which a vital Rambaldi manuscript makes its way into the possession of of a London publisher, one 'Miss Bridget Jones.' (JB/BJ, sort of)
Review: Yes it really is an Alias/Bridget Jones crossover, as narrated by Bridget herself in her diary. When she ends up with a Rambaldi manuscript she meets up with Jack, and later Sydney, Bristow. And being Bridget, obssesses over Jack and is jealous of Sydney. It's funny, it doesn't seem unlikely to happen in either universe and all the characters are in all character.

Plot: Crossover Parody! 'Okay, on the off chance that I've misheard you, that perhaps there is a merciful God and my cold medication is just creating auditory hallucinations, let me repeat -- You're saying that Crackpots Day is only a cover for the clandestine supernatural and paranormal activities of the government?'
Review: Really the only reason to read this is because it's damn funny. Spit out coke on your monitor-style funny. I challenge anyone to read this and not laugh out loud at some point.
Slightly more seriously, this a cross-over that actually works. Yes, the characterisations are parodied a little, but they fit with the tone of this fic and just make it funny. And it's surprising how little parody needs to be done with some of them. The dialogue is superb and Yahtzee has an eye for the ridiculous in all these fandoms (and let's face it, there are some ridiculous elements to some of these fandoms). If you need a giggle and have any familiarity with two or more of these shows, then read this.

Review: This was written for the femslash08 ficathon and is one of the many gems to come out of it. Really good Susan/Talia fic is hard to find and post-series fic is even harder. Calle captures the voices just perfectly and creates a story that is both true to them and thoroughly new. I loved the hope in the story and the blunt, to the point Susan that we have come to love. At a decent length, it's the kind of fic that you can get your teeth into and enjoy.

Plot: Most of the people in the rebellion had a bitter reason for it: a father killed, a sister taken away, or a home demolished or liberty denied. Jenna had no such trauma. Her family was respectable, her status impeccable, her freedoms generous by Federation standards.
Review: I wouldn't have said Jenna was my favourite Blakes 7 character, but this story made me find her interesting. The trouble with the series was that she never had that much to do, so this gives her a lot more backstory and you can understand from it why she's the way she is.
It's written in an interesting way, with tales from her life before the series starts intercut with her opinions on the Liberator crew. It gives us a new view of them and of her too.

Each day is written from a different point of view as they all get to grips with what Avon is doing, what they think of it, and what they would do in his position. Although the characters do things in it that surprise each other they're still definitely in character. Review: This story is written in script format but that works for this fic because it makes it easier to read the questions and answers as coming thick and fast. Some of the questions relate to actual episodes, which makes them quite interesting. The perfomance of each of them, and the questions they get wrong or right are interesting insights into their characters. The best part of the whole thing though, is what happens after the show, which of course I can't reveal here.

Review: I haven't seen 'The Replacement' (I've only read the transcripts and have to wait until the TV stations in England show it) but this is a great take on a great episode. The two halves of Buffy, Slayer and Buffy, are used well here and it's a shame the show has never investigated this side of her. So it's not surprising that re-writing the episode has worked so well, and the Buffy/Willow overtones that were worked in don't jar at all. Kirayoshi kept in many of the funniest lines (a wise choice) and I barely even noticed the changes. If only all episode re-writes were this well-executed...

Review: Nomad does perfect Aaron Sorkin - the plot is interesting, the characters are all in character and it's all very much like a West Wing episode. Except for the vampire slaying part. Most of the plot revolves around Donna learning to be a vampire slayer (with Josh getting in the way) and them trying not to let the rest of the staff find out. Which does tend to mean they get into some very interesting situations.
There are two sequels to this - I dare anyone who reads the first chapter of DtVS not to work their way through all of them.

Review: When I came to the end of the Chalet School series I thought Margot's decision as to her career was a very sudden, and odd, one. Review: This fic has a lovely, gentle writing style that still packs something when you read. Steph captures Nick and Greg surprisingly well, raising a smile sometimes and at other times feeling for them. Plot: The snake, eating its own tail; the wayside boundary stone: by what measureless markers should Life be understood?
Review: One of the major things that I liked about this fic was the way that the relationships parallel each other without being re-enactments. It's a great look at Nita's relationship with Kit, which doesn't follow the usual paths of a male/female relationship in books and the writer doesn't try to make it into something else in her fic.
Tom and Carl are great characters and they are just right in this fic. You can read their relationship as either romantic or platonic from the books and I've often wondered whether that is deliberate. This fic gives some lovely insight into how they might have met and reads between the lines without changing either character.
This is also a plotty fic and it feels like it could be an extra few chapters in one of the book. It's a fic that just works.

Review: Dodo is intent on making Steven realise his feelings for her match hers for him. You can see how they get closer in the segments of the story connected directly with the episodes. The last scene is quite sad and hopeful. It's set immediately after Captain Jack joins the TARDIS crew. I've noticed that Captain Jack, one of my favourite characters, seems to be a difficult one for fanfic authors to get a decent handle on. He too often descends into caricature - the author of this fic gets him just right and conveys the beginnings of a friendship with the Doctor beautifully. It's primarily the 9th and 10th Doctors, but KickAir incorporates elements from original and new series without difficulty. You don't strictly need to have watched the original series, but a couple of the Things will have more resonance if you're familiar with it. KickAir comes up with some interesting potential AUs, the first one probably being my least favourite and I thoroughly enjoyed the rest. The second has echoes of an 'Age of Steel' question that I've been discussing with friends lately and it's always good to see Sarah-Jane return.

Review: The summary doesn't do justice to this fic. It's a more serious fic than it sounds, occasionally funny but also moving. The ideas in it are fascinating and Rain describes it all in a way that makes it alive in your head. It's a long, solidly-written story that will keep you absorbed to the end.

Review: This story is so beautifully written that I knew I'd be reccing it within two paragraphs. It's about the Doctor, in his many re-incarnations, and fairy stories. It's also about the people he loves. It's a series of short vignettes that tie together and make a greater whole. The images are vivid and the writing has just the right touch of calm dreaminess. Plot: The Doctor and River always begin things at the end. This is their life.
Review: This is a fic that I read because it sounded interesting but I didn't think that I would actually review it. A Doctor/River fic published within a few days of the episode? Why would I want to do that?
The thing is that this is a great fic. It plays around with the idea of a non-linear life to explain so much about the Doctor and River. It keeps both of them in character and extrapolates what they might be like at various stages of their life in a way that's completely believable. Time travel stories are inevitably difficult to construct because the core story-line has to be kept in mind while taking snapshots from it and mixing them up. So to have a story written this well that makes sense and leaves you genuinely caring for everyone is a treat.

Review: The Doctor is interestingly alien in this, as the things he goes through are almost human, but not quite. I like the small hints we see of the life that Sarah has and what she gets up to. I especially like the relationships between the characters - they're layered so that they're not really one thing or another, but fit the characters well.
Mostly, this is just really well written - it pulled me in and I couldn't put it down. The best part is that there's a (longer) sequel and another sequel to that that has just started being put up at the time of writing.

Plot: AU. In the 1930s in Austria, Sarah Jane Smith comes to the Chalet School to teach while looking for a journalism job, and Harry Sullivan takes a job at the nearby Sanatorium. They meet and fall in love, but with these two it's never going to be that simple.
Review: Usually I have a rule that I don't rec people that I've had anything to do with beta-ing or people that I might be a bit biased about. PA is my partner in crime on the reviews so she should definitely fall into this category.
The problem is that this is an excellent fic. She makes the cross-over - possibly the least likely I'd heard of - work and she does it in a completely different way from hhertzof's DW/CS cross-over. The relationship between Sarah and Harry feels just right for them. There are enough details and background for people not familiar with Chalet School to understand it but you can definitely see that this is a DW AU as well. It fits into the CS canon and PA gives the Doctor Who regulars motivations and ideas that slot in perfectly without losing the core of those characters. Read this as a great, addictive novel and enjoy.

I'm pleased to report that the rest of the fic lives up to that first sentence. The beauty of time travel is that things aren't necessarily linear and that's something Raven plays with well. The writing is what really makes this fic work because it does appear on the surface to be an odd combination of fandoms and pairings. Raven writes it so well though, with a deft touch for the deeper ideas that she only hints at, that you can be persuaded that this really does work. She also has a great feel for the characters and what they're doing, which makes this a great combination.

I love the ideas in it and Kesomon has a style that blends the humour of the situation perfectly with the action. Lupin had a charmed life in comparison to some of these children, and that's what really makes this story stand out - the OCs. Plot: Hiding a vulnerable princeling from enemy eyes and concealing his identity until he's grown are certainly the stuff of legends. But even if the legend is true, it probably does not tell the whole story. Would Gilraen have preferred to raise Aragorn as his father's son and not hidden his identity? Would Elrond expect Aragorn's mother to come with him to Rivendell, or would he believe it easier to hide the boy from Sauron's eye if she lived elsewhere? That they ended up together in Rivendell, and that Aragorn's identity was successfully concealed, is fact. But how?
Review: The best thing about this fic is the believable way Gwynnyd finds to explain how Aragorn could possibly be hidden at Rivendell. After reading this it's hard to imagine that this is not what actually happened.
Interspersed with this are lovely snapshots of Gilraen and Arathorn in happier times and Gilraen mourning his death. The characters are all in character. It's really hard to say too much about it without giving away the plot, suffice to say it all seems very real.

Review: It's really just a series of vignettes about Merry, Pippin and life moments, but there's something gentle and caring about it without going over the edge into smarmy-sap. I can't really say much else because they're five very short pieces (so no over-arching plot) and that's probably the point. Short, drabbly vingettes like this are hard to do well, but Jane manages and produced a lovely, special piece.

Review: This story is nice and horrible at the same time. It's nice to see Elrond and Elros together and enjoying each others company. But it's horrible because it doesn't happen easily and it's not hard to guess how it's going to end. It's a nice look at Elros's life in Númenor as well. jessicaramage also weaves in flashbacks of how they said goodbye in Middle-earth as well, which explains the situation the brothers are in, and it fits well with the plot in the present.

This is silly, sweet and incredibly funny. It gently mocks some of the LotR cliches while being very tender. I could see exactly what Lobelia was describing as I read and couldn't help laughing out loud at some of the wonderful lines and images she created. Unfortunately if I quoted any of my favourite lines it would completely give away the plot because this is quite short, so I won't. Plot: When a grieving, angry Elladan and Elrohir return home with a sharp tongue and a grisly trophy of their orc-slaying, they cross paths with Glorfindel.
Review: It's quite a dark story because it deals with Elladan and Elrohir still being angry even though it's been eighty years since their mother sailed. Although the twins are not the nicest people in this story it's easy to see where they're coming from.In the end it's Glorfindel who has to tell them that what they're doing is wrong and the way he gets it through to them is very well done.
It's something of a different characterisation of the twins, and of Elrond, but it comes from the text and there's nothing to suggest that isn't how it was. In fact, it's probably likely that this is what happened.

Emily Glick has really invented a whole culture that feels real and OCs who exist in it and interact with the Jedi.
It's long enough that along with the drama there's also a bit of angst, humour, action and mystery. All three of the characters have issues to deal with during the course of their mission, which is an interesting mystery. FernWithy makes the world of Malkiri and the OCs seem real. Obi-Wan, Anakin and Siri are all perfectly characterised as well.
It's quite a sad story in a way because being in that family would probably help them, but they can't have it. It's nice to see what maybe could have been, had they not been Jedi, and yet at the same time struggle with their undercover aliases and personalities.

Review: There's some lovely Obi-Wan & Anakin relationship stuff in here (of the non-slash variety). Jaxmari paints a great picture of their ordinary lives: their opinions on heat and Obi-Wan's punishments are examples that stick in my mind.
After that set-up the story goes onto a lesson that Yoda gives and Obi-Wan participates in. There's lots of foreshadowing, given we know what's going to happen. Both Anakin and Obi-Wan have so much faith in Anakin's future as a Jedi.
What really got me about this was the way the characters fitted into the ones we know from the films and the books. Even though there's not been much with Anakin at this age, I can imagine that this is exactly how what happened.

It's a denial-fic, so Qui-Gon is still alive, Obi-Wan is preparing for his knight's trials and Anakin is also Qui-Gon's padawan. Which is where some of the angst comes from on the part of Obi-Wan. To say where any of the rest comes from would be to give the plot away.

Perhaps it's because the characterisation's great: you can almost feel the tension between Sam and Jack. The original characters are well fleshed out.
Perhaps it's the plot: it twists this back and forth so you just can't tell who is going to end up with who.
The one bad thing in this is an OC at the end who seemed so cliched he overrode the rest of the story at that point. But it's only a small niggle in a long story.

Plot: It's night and Jack's trying to get his thoughts into some kind of order.
Review: Reflective pieces are hard to do well because they depend so much on getting a character's 'voice' right. They also depend on keeping the reader's interest. This one succeeds beautifully. Ximeria has Jack's 'voice' just right and the quiet, thoughtful tone compliments the piece while still holding the attention. It's a short piece so I can't say much without giving away most of the content. So I'll just say that it's set after Daniel's return in S7 and needs to be read to understand why I say that it's beautiful.

Plot: Atlantis reads the Great Books. . . of Pegasus.
Review: Everyone in Atlantis reads great works of Pegasus literature and discuss them. Even though we know nothing of the plot beyond what's in the story, just from what the characters say it's easy to work out what the basic plot is and what they're talking about. Some of the people aren't those you expect to read and some that you would expect, are. I love all the character's reactions to the books, and they are perfectly in character, even though none of them are doing anything we've seen before in canon.

Plot: He was dating Rodney McKay, and no one had had the decency to tell him.
Review: This fic is something of a cliche in that it involves Rodney accidentally getting engaged to an alien woman in village on another world and getting out of it by pretending to be married to Sheppard. But that doesn't matter because it's played for laughs. The whole team get good lines but Sheppard and McKay get the best ones. Especially the foreplay one.

Review: This is a lovely sweet fic with a little humour in it. Weir ends up with Sheppard's (favourite) shirt, then, not unreasonably, just can't seem to give it back. There's a good balance in here between their personal and professional relationship and the sides of themselves that they show to each other.

Plot: The mousy secretary has to pretend to be engaged to the busy executive boss. You know, because that always happens.
Review: This was written as a response to the Harlequin challenge on sga_flashfic and I just couldn't resist reccing it. Anyone who has read a Harlequin book can guess what kind of fic the authors were challenged to write. Kylie being Kylie, though, she turned out a fic that hit every cliche, but is well written and completely absorbing. Weir/Zelenka isn't a pairing that I would usually pick up, yet here it works brilliantly.
The fic is absolutley AU, but everyone is in character and fits. There's a gentle humour in the ideas Kylie is using and it's written as a knowing tribute to the ridiculous cliches in these novels without turning into a parody.

Review: I read this and knew immediately that I had to recommend it. The thing that really caught me was Salieri's beautiful language - this piece has a lyrical quality that I don't often see in fanfiction. Her descriptions and choice of words evoke an atmosphere that's hard to describe.
This is also a fascinating look into a moment, revealing things about both characters that ties in perfectly with the people we watch on the screen. The only word that I can find to describe this fic is beautiful. It really is.

Plot: Two and a half years have gone by since Mrs. Emma Peel left John Steed to rejoin her pilot-husband, found alive in South America after being presumed dead for some time. Steed and Emma's successor, Tara King, have lately grown apart, and Steed is finding it increasingly difficult to feign any interest in what seem to him to be increasingly dull assignments. He finds himself on yet another such boring job when events take a wholly unexpected turn, and Mother tasks him with a problem that leads Steed reluctantly to Mrs. Peel and ultimately forces him to confront one of the most diabolical masterminds he has ever faced, as well as a side of himself he has tried to suppress for years.
Review: I had great difficulty in classifying this because it's a bit like the series itself - lots of innuendo but nothing for definite. And that's why I'm reviewing this, it reads like a long episode. It has all the usual Avengers elements of diabolical masterminds and Steed and women. But it also deals with Steed and Mrs Peel's relationship post-Forget Me Knot, which is beautifully angsty.
